an "unsearched" roll from ebay

So I said what the hell, I play slot machines why not pick up an "unsearched roll" from ebay. I've looked at them for years on there mumbling under my breath BS there's no way they are unsearched. I set some rules for myself:
    1. Seller MUST have 100% positive feedback.
    2. Seller must not sell only rolls.
    3. Preferably I find a seller of odds n ends, not just coins.
    4. I spend under $100
I picked up an "unsearched roll" of what I thought would be wheat cents.
    Some highlights of the roll:
    1. I felt a little better when I handled the roll and it was rolled so tight I had a hard time opening it - the paper was also very brittle which I guess meant nothing, but it made me assume the roll was left wrapped for decades.
    2. A 1915 and 1922 were on the roll ends.
    3. The 1922 was a d with 2 die breaks on the reverse - pretty neat
    4. Dates range from 1912 to 1933 in wheats and 1897 to 1907 Indian cents (8 of them)
    5. Multiples of 1915 and 1915d only.
    6. Coins were G to VF the 22 d IMO is a VF.
    7. The range of dates made me think this was a start of a collection just rolled up and stored away.

Would I do it again? Probably not. I was satisfied with what was in the roll. I read so many reviews of people having won rolls on ebay and complaining the roll was searched and they got nothing. Ask what your expectations are before you bid. What are the actual chances you will find say a 1909 s vdb lincoln. You can't get disappointed when the roll turns up common dates right? Has anyone ever had good luck with an "unsearched" ebay roll????

Depending on how close to that $100 limit you got, you may have made a decent buy...

I agree with that 100%. I had a feeling this was a start or part of a collection just rolled up and put aside. The paper was so tightly wrapped and so brittle that if it was a rewrapped roll bravo to the fella that did it. Good job. I was satisfied with what was in there.

I was close to the limit. I did a quick grade/price and I say I didn't really make out or lose on the deal. I'm satisfied with what was in the roll. Had it been all 1934 wheats aside from the 1922 D I would have chewed every cent with smoke coming out of my ears!

There most certainly is, at least OBWs, but expecting them to fall into one's lap on eBay? Right on... :)

Perhaps a decent buy, yes.... or maybe a baited hook. ;)

A baited hook for sure. Ironically the 1922 was on the end. You could see it for sure while bidding. Thankfully the seller had a big enough heart to fill the roll with coins that covered the cost of the auction. 98% of them dont!

Yes I did find a great seller on ebay that does sell real unsearched rolls, I found a 14d, 3 09s, all the early teen s mnts and on and on, he has changed now and sells not just pre 1903 rolls but all years has been a little more difficut now but still I felll he is with any doubt the most hones on ebay.

I think the OP did well, whether they broke even/ plus or minus.
But I have no doubt, that even with all of the "seeded" enders, 99% of the rolls are worth less than what is paid for them. These items should not even be allowed for sale.

I bid on a so-called unsearched roll of cents with S mint Indians on both ends a few years ago. I bid assuming the Indians were 1908 S. When I got the roll I quickly determined that one of the 1908 S cents was counterfeit and notified the seller. We agreed to him paying me back half my cost for the roll (I kept the remaining coins). The remaining roll contained two genuine 1908 S and several other AU Indians. One of the 1908 S graded NGC uncirculated details while the other was VF30. Overall I probably got what I paid in the end. That was the last "unsearched" roll I bought. Most likely, you are helping someone get rid of a lot of excess low value coins. I have many rolls of wheat cents I'd like to get rid of and one way to do it would be to seed the ends with semi keys or higher value coins and fill the rest of the roll with common stuff. Of course putting one or two nice coins in a few of the rolls will help with good reviews and help sell more.

That said, I never will do something this dishonest (in my opinion) just to get rid of excess coins. Just as many people buy lottery tickets, some buy "unsearched" rolls in hopes of winning big.

If I tried buying a unsearched roll I'd probably get a roll of 2013's that were hit with a hammer

Honestly for my personal opinion I have tried to find original Bank wrapped rolls and I have come up with nothing but pre-packaged coins that were repackage but you lucked out honestly any week since that you find in a roll are a blessing as they are getting rarer and rarer to find in circulation has a lot of the collectors art soaking them up

I always laugh when I see a roll offered with Indian cents on both ends. Yet, it will be advertised as a wheat cent roll. How would you possibly know there were wheats inside if it was an unsearched roll?
