After about 10 years of collecting ancients, I've decided to go after making a set of the 12 Caesars. I wasn't in any hurry to build it but this popped up fora decent price. Thanks for the tip Mat. Galba AE25 Diobol Alexandria, Egypt. Obv. Laur. head left. Rev. Bust of Isis right. Dattari 320. Year 2 = 68/69 AD. Feel free to share you Galbas.
Good luck on your quest for the 12. It can be a very fun ride. There are so many choices one can make along the way that it is never dull. I hope you enjoy the process. Here is my Galba
Here's a strong detail Galba Alexandrian TET that I picked up cheap because it had red oxide in places. Struck 68 AD, 23.8mm, 12.83gm, Emmett 172.
That's not a bad portrait for Alexandrian, as some of the Tets like I just posted his nose is way to big, by the way how many of the 12 caesars do yo have with that one?
Thanks all. It'll be a mix of imperial/provincials, ae/silver. Something that put me off years ago,but I'm perfectly fine with that now. I have 9/12 (10 if you count fourees) but I have JC portrait coming soon hopefully, so I'll just need Vitellius and Otho.
Wow @randygeki , you are well on your way to a fun set. My set is hard-scrabble too as a mixture of AE and AR. But it is a COOL collecting set! My Galba: RI Galba AE Sestertius SPQR - O.B - CIV.SER in Wreath
There is some really nice coins in that lot I can make out a good detail Augustus and Claudius, and some of those later emperors in silver are great, what JC portrait have you got coming?
I could shoot for all AE, but a mixed lot feels more representative to me. The JC is Colonia Viennensis, dupondius (well half so an "As") I got lucky with the Augustus an Claudius. The Caligula is a bit of an eye sore, as well as Tiberius.
Very nice, Randy! I wouldn't mind having that one I have only one Alexandrian Galba: EGYPT, Alexandria. Galba year 2, CE 68/9 tetradrachm Obv: ΣEPOVIΓAΛBAAVTOKAIΣΣEBA; laureate head right; LB Rev: Bust of Roma right, with shield and spear forward; PΩMH Ref: Emmett 174.2, Milne 325
randy-g => hey, congrats on your OP-Galba I have an example as well ... ol' Black Galba Yah, at times I think about finishing-off my 12 Caesar set (I have 9 random coins of those guys) ... but usually something will pop-up and distract me ... => "SQUIRREL" geki => I wish you great luck on your hunt to finish-off your set
Good catch Randy ! A mix of silver/bronze-imperial/provincial wouldn't bother me either, as you write, it can be representative of the coinage of the period. My own set is made of 9 silver and 3 bronze My Galba : Galba, As minted in Rome AD 68 SER GALBA IMP CAESAR AVG PON M TR PPP, Laureate head of Galba right Rome seated left, SC in field 10,60 gr Ref : Cohen #182 Q Oh, and no, I won't sell you my Vitellius and Otho
