I tell myself that I do not need one of each of the anonymous RR denarii, but I could not pass on this one at it's minimum bid. It was a bit like the ugly duckling and needed some love. The seller's pics -
    Anon Den Cr 164.1a.jpg
Roman Republican Denarius, Rome, 211-206 B.C.
Obv - Head of Roma right, wearing winged helmet decorated with head of griffin; X behind.
Rev - The Dioscuri on horseback riding right, each holding a spear, in linear frame ROMA
    20.1 mm, 2.98 g, 11 h
The coin was listed as VF, flan chip. That is about right for me. There is not much wear, but a lot of the coin is missing. What looks good to me are the details on the horses. I think the irregular flan is interesting. I do not want all of my coins to be irregular, but one or two are interesting.

It looks like Steve Brinkman's web site agrees, your thoughts? http://stevebrinkman.ancients.info/anonymous/index.html#intro

Post your anonymous denarii. Crawford has 22 (I think) types & Brinkman adds 2 more. How many do CT folks have?

It's definitely 164/1a and a nice example of the type. I'd be surprised if you found an anon silver that RBW misattributed as he took a special interest in those from what I understand, and he certainly had quite a few of them. Unfortunately I don't have any fully-anon denarii just yet, every time one comes around that I like I get outbid or just don't have room in the budget at the time. One of these days.

I bought this Octavian Denarius for similar reasons to you rrdenarius, you can see most of the detail is strong and a hell of a lot cheaper than if it didn't have the broken 560_large_4c29983d26c06c4cbc8c12a42a771dc9.jpg edges, this one I purchased of the Curia senate house in the Roman forum are extremely expensive in good VF but with a few bits broken under 200 Euro.

Fantastic OP denarius!! Flan chip or not, I would have bid on this as well! One of these high on my RR want list.

At Ancient Aussie, very nice Augustus with Senate house!

Congrats! This is a genuinely rare coin. I have the other variety, 164/1b, but it's no wonder coin either:

Yeah, you're right Brian... But I'm currently watching a few other RR denarii at the moment...circa 126 BC and I'm risking life and limb as it is LOL
