I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully just a common variety because of the extensive wear. Here is some more help....New Jersey Copper Coins - PCGS CoinFacts
Just picked this up. The white spots are artifacts from photography. It's the outlined shield variety and looks like your example could be similar. VF-30 BN
Nah. That's if you like the Jersey Devils. Seriously, nice piece of history in numismatics. I don't even have one. I do have a CT. Copper, however.
I wouldn't claim that! I have been more into Connecticuts the last few years, but have a soft spot for New Jerseys, I got my first as a young teenager some 50 years ago!
Absolutely the best is this one. New Jersey State Coppers: Siboni, Roger S., Howes, John L., Ish, A. Buell: 9780897223287: Amazon.com: Books ,but there's a lot of info on most of the early American coins here, Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins: Q David Bowers: 9780794847272: Amazon.com: Books
The two books previously cited are both great. I have both. But the New Jersey State Coppers, Siboni, et.al. c2013 has a new edition called the NJ State Coppers Companion, c2024. I suggest you get that one. It is available for $85 from: http://www.numislit.com/ or Charlie Davis at http://www.numisbook.com/ I have no affiliation with the authors or the distributors.
