Do you have an online pattern to compare to? Any date?

 

being they minted these in 86,87, and 88 I don't know but 87 seems to be the most minted.

Just picked this up. The white spots are artifacts from photography. It's the outlined shield variety and looks like your example could be similar. VF-30 BN

 

Really nice example! Barely circulated in my opinion.

 

It's a 38-a, which is a bit of a better variety at R-5.

 

This one is a 48-g, which is an R-1 variety.

I wouldn't claim that! I have been more into Connecticuts the last few years, but have a soft spot for New Jerseys, I got my first as a young teenager some 50 years ago!

 

I would like to get into more NJ coppers. What book do you recommend? I have the Breen.

The two books previously cited are both great. I have both. But the New Jersey State Coppers, Siboni, et.al. c2013 has a new edition called the NJ State Coppers Companion, c2024. I suggest you get that one. It is available for $85 from:
