There was several times I was thinking to buy this type obol, but every time not go to the final with this and now I know why... this obol from @Collect89 amazing and much more better than all I have seen.... such quality coin is a correct aim for hunting!
I took this photograph from a wall moulding in Pompeii. Not sure what it would be called. Half lion-half fish being ridden by a Cupid. Nobody said it had to be a coin did they and it's certainly ancient.
I love search engines. I made up a word for this: Leocamp. Then I searched and found out that actually was what you call it. Taking Latin fifty years ago was not a waste after all. http://www.theoi.com/Gallery/Z34.8.html
A lion's head on a single lion's leg forming each leg of a marble tripod table base also from Pompeii.
Well, since we've moved on from coins ... Lion of Ishtar Processional Way of the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, circa 6th century BC. Built by King Nebuchadnezzar II Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen
Ah-- that bas relief brick looks familiar. Maybe we discussed your avatar before but if so I don't remember. I see now that your avi is also from the Ishtar Gate of Babylon image from tumblr; dragon of the god Marduk
I wondered if anyone would spot that . They have a really nice selection of antiquities in that museum.
@zumbly the style of the lion head of this babylonian bas relief together with some assyrian examples are very close to my avatar. So, I am always looking on this simple example of hekte as an etalon of great assyrian-babylonian culture in lion images. From this point of view this type hektes are amazing!
Great pics of the ancient lions & lion-like everyone! Wanted to add in my pic from Pompei Here is Lion/Eagle/Man fresco I shot at Pompei:
