This was a pretty bizarre read, at least for me http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-THE-TOILET-PENNY-/222378697153?hash=item33c6cda1c1:g:BccAAOSw241YU0fE
FWIW, most (all?) toilets are dated when made. His yarn of the plumbers putting a penny in to date the installation is ridiculous.
That has to be the strangest coin listing I've read. Funny thing is he said he got an offer of a $100 so he decided to auction it then puts a BIN of $99, guess he's really hoping for that sucker that's born everyday.
No, but plumbers frequently put coins under toilets to level them. Its very common for that purpose. I think the poster was saying this, its common under a toilet but he found this in the toilet. Now why he would put it on Ebay for $99 BIN when he ALREADY had a $100 offer, yes that is just stupid, (as is the idea this coin is worth more than $.01).
That's what I was thinking as well. Sometimes they are used as shims in a pinch. Then when I continued reading about the dating of the installation thing I was almost laughing. Like a plumber takes the time to find a current date Lincoln and make sure he brings it to a toilet installation. Maybe he keeps a bunch in his toolbag. An inherently gross funny listing
Please do NOT take this as a negative Cascade - this is no reflection on you. In fact, if I am not mistaken, you are the Cascade on another forum whom I consider a friend. Sorry for being a kill joy, but I respect this assassinated Forefather too much to say anything positive about that penny other than the the person carving it was skilled. In fact it makes me a bit angry at how insensitive we have become. We Americans have been being brainwashed in the last 40 years to belittle our past. If it were not for the man that penny represents, ours would likely be a worse lot. I do not believe the carver of this coin, nor the owner had thought along these lines. We live in a day when what was considered unthinkable disrespect in former years is dismissed to the point of people just not taking the time to think things through thoroughly. I consider myself guilty in this area also.
You're missing some historical context. "Potty dollars" date back at least to the 1870s, and I would expect they existed before that -- I'll bet someone with adult carving skills and a child's sense of humor did one as soon as Seated Liberty coins started appearing. They aren't intended as an insult or a political statement, just as an elementary-school-level joke.
You can't get too wrapped up in the supposed "insult". American history is full of such images, you should read how insulting books and newspapers were of who we know consider "founding fathers". Personally, I do not care for Lincoln believing the states were right and they were entitled to leave if they wished. Also, he violated more civil rights than any other president in pursuit of what he thought was right, (forced continuation of the union). Be it as it may my position of Lincoln versus the true founding fathers, (whom I respect a great deal), maybe a better solution would be to remove all dead politicians from coins and currency altogether. I would rather honor poets, writers, scientists, and other rather than (mostly) vainglorious politicians, whatever their ilk. We should honor the Wright Brothers, Edison, Thoreou, (sp?), Twain, Poe, and others who made America great by their actions not their political speeches.
A politician should be able poke fun at themselves and laugh at others that poke fun at their expense. As much as I didn't care for George W., I have to respect his being able to be humourous. Lincoln definitely didn't think too seriously of himself which was a good thing because even in his day he was excoriated even in the northern press.
Yup, good thing politics is off limits here. We wouldn't stand a chance against that kind of intalecked.
