I can't find the link just now, but I believe the Cheerios Sacs were a pattern coin. they weren't intended to be, but the design, most noticable in the tail feathers of the eagle, were changed after the Cheerios dollars were sent out. Used to have one. Wish I had known better than to give it away, but who knew at the time? Guy~
Glenna Goldacre was paid for her design with 5000 2000P dollar coins with a special presentation finish. I understand she kept 2500 and sold 2500. The Cheerios coins(5500) were made from the dies that produced the gold Coins for the shuttle. The tail feathers on the reverse were later changed for circulation coins. The Cheerios coins sell for much more because fewer than 100 have come to the market.
yes, the Cheerios $'s had a strong center tail feather. The Guide Book lists them as 'boldly detailed tail feathers' no price listed.
More trivia - the 12 solid gold Sac dollars that the Mint flew on the space shuttle were struck with the same dies as thge Cheerios coins. Just check out www.SmallDollars.com for any small dollars questions.
This auction is the first one that I know of to be offered at public auction (other than eBay). It will likely set the real world value for the Cheerios Sacs for the near future. The long term value will be dependant on whether or not a bunch of them come to market over the next few years. edited to add: I've seen a Cheerios Sac in person and can vouch for it's numismatic "coolness". Even with the naked eye the tail feathers are obviously different from its normal counterparts. If you are going to be in Milwaukee make it a point to see the original gold Sacs and then go to Heritage lot viewing to see this coin
The story of those cereal $ is amazing - undetected for so long. I imagine there are lots sitting in kitchen drawers or elsewhere, placed there after they were found. Or, many might have been spent once te novelty wore off.
So true. Thats why they are selling for 10 times the price of the Goodacre coins even though more were minted. How many kids have these multi thousand dollar coins in a shoebox under their bed?
