How Much is Too Much when Dumping?

With one of my banks getting rid of their coin machines that is a huge blow to my coin roll hunting. I still have four dump banks that are relatively close to work and home. So what I am getting at is how much is too much when you dump. The Tellers at these banks dump for you when you bring them up. I usually give them a box of halves and that seems about right for a small teller to still be able to handle. What do you guys do on your dumps. How much? How heavy? Do you do multiple dumps in one visit? How many different banks do you go to? I am thinking of giving the tellers a bag of $750.00 in halves to dump but I don't know if that would be too heavy for some of the smaller tellers. I also don't want to piss them off.

My bank has do-it-yourself coin counters, so I can't help you with that one.

FWIW, I try not to do too much at any one location lest they tire of my antics.

I wouldn't do more than $500 in halves, that is a box anyway. Some banks have quite frankly gotten rid of machines or started surcharging on coins because of the perceived inconvenience. Best thing to be friendly with tellers, and not overwhelm them.

I dump at my CU, 3 or 4 different branches but like others its a free to members coin machine. The thing I hate is when you fill the Machine and they have to come and lug a large bag of halves away. So I take 500 and low and behold the bag is almost full already and they have to empty machine.I cant win! This type I usually am not afraid of $1000.00 dump at a time. But I only do it once every few weeks per branch.

I think that depends entirely on the bank and the individuals who are working there. I don't usually do the volume you do Bman, but I do on occasion. I have taken as much as $6,000 at a time. That was $5k in dollars and $1k in halves at a time. and a total of $15k in a month all to one branch. They never questioned it.
Personally I think it works out better to take all returns to the same bank same branch all the time. the reason I think that is speculation about the chain of events after the coin has left at the bank. I believe the coin is then picked up by a armored service. They may take it to their own coin sorting facility or more likely they transport it to the Federal Reserve Bank branch nearest them. (Y'all do know the Federal Reserve Bank is NOT the government, but a private bank) So a lot of banks send their coin to the Federal Reserve to be counted and sorted.
So now I imagine the stream of coin coming into the FR. If they get a LOT from one source that has all been searched, then those boxes of rolled coin will of course be skunks, but the OTHER boxes, the ones that come from banks that don't get big dumps, will have a higher percentage of silver because they have not been "diluted" with so many sources of searched coin.
So, really, the only way it does help is if the dump bank does NOT use the FR but does their own count and roll, thus keeping all that searched coin out of the FR stream. Because my deposit bank is one of the big major banks, I think they have their own central processing, thus bypassing the FR. My pick up bank does use the FR. I believe this because the wrappers on the rolls are different that come into the 2 banks.
So, ultimately, the trick is to deposit all your coin at a bank that wraps with one kind of wrapper, and pick up at a bank that uses another kind of wrapper. That way you are at least not getting your same coin back so quickly.
In the end it probably doesn't make any difference. It all gets dumped in a hopper, counted and rolled.
the best way to get searched coin out of the stream and see more silver is to spend the searched halves so that people save them and take them out of circulation altogether.

I should also mention that I keep a savings account at my deposit bank and bring a small gift to the tellers from time to time. They really do not complain when I bring in multiple boxes of coin

Also, I try not to have more coin that a box would be. In their job they handle boxes so that is a reasonable amount of weight to expect them to handle. but a bag of more than $500 in coin is pretty heavy, so you might want to use more bags and keep it to $500 per bag, just for the sake of having to lift and handle them.

This makes the most sense. Funny thing though is my girlfriend searches halves too. She is a petite 5'1" gal and has no problem hauling in $750.00 in halves. My problem is the bulk I want to do a week will be cut in half unless I start dumping $750.00 at a time or join another bank. Gotta figure out what to do.

I would never think of dumping that amount of coin on any single branch and /or teller. They, the tellers, do get paid squat ya know.

I have one branch of one of my different banks that have "the machine". Maybe dump a few hundred $ coin in total every 2-3 months and no matter the denomination or amount of dump, a bag or two will fill, shut down machine, and have to wait until teller does their thing. I always offer to carry the filled bags to the fault, which they let me do. These are not young tellers. I feel darn right guilty for the extra work I impose on them!

In the end, if you have enough digits in your account of THAT bank then the bank will not care, but the tellers may.

I dump at 7 different banks a week. It's about to become 3 or 4. I will deposit more money in that account as it is not my normal bank.

Have a six figure account and the bank will not care, or shouldn't, but the tellers working for them will get real tired of it. Our/your CRH hobby is a lot of work for the little folk......Ever remember Barbara Streisand say, " I would like to thank all the little people". And I am a little people. Not possible for me to purchase, and take the time to actually Search $100's, $1000's of coin per day, week, or month.

In my opinion, just "edge" searching is a waste. So many finds that have slipped through your fingers.

True searching is an art,.... especially in patience and time.

When do you have time to work? So much time picking up, searching and then the time dumping. On top of that, got to keep that 5'1" happy.
Must be nice to have your job.

All my banks are close to work and home. Get a box, open during lunch break. Dump on the way home from work. Friday night is halves night with my girl. We each do 3 boxes. I admit, my Saturday morning isn't too fun as I am dumping. I am changing that so I don't wast a whole Saturday morning.

Damn, must be a nice lunch break. I am a strappin, older middle aged, overweight, male in a physical labor job and there is not a F'n chance I could even physically open that many BRW of a $500 box in 30 minutes. The lunch break that most hard working workers get.

Bank is 5 minutes away and takes me 20 minutes to go through a box of halves. I am not interested in looking at every 74 for the double die so anything for me to look at is 70 and earlier. Now, tonight I am doing a box of cents. Those take me forever to do. Probably won't finish the box tonight.

It would be a 74 Doubled Die, not "double die".

No edge roll searching on cents, ;). Just time and more time. But you never know.

The big key to dumping is keeping the tellers happy, cookies, boxes of candy, occasional hockey tickets in our season ticket holder seats etc help out. Always have a good attitude, especially when the machine acts up and stops working. I have helped haul bags, wheeled carts, opened doors etc.

You know it works when they are okay with you dumping lots of coins and then ask if you want to buy what just came across the counter, ie red seal $2's, Ikes, silver quarters etc.

Ok, I thought about dumping at the same banks twice a week to keep my boxes of halves at 7-8 per week. Is twice a week too much you think?

The banks are going to let you know if you're dumping too much. A bunch of guys speculating about it on a forum isn't going to mean anything as it's really down to the bank, heck even down to individual branches. Tellers can be kept happy sure it helps but coinage delivery and pickups cost banks money. When it becomes a net loss for them, as eventually the manager will notice that volume of coinage they're probably going to say so. That is unless account balances are kept high enough where the bank doesn't want to upset a customer.
