I saw this very interesting CC today and thought I would share the picture. Has anyone ever seen this before? It does not coincide with the VAM 2. http://www.ebay.com/itm/222386408135?ul_noapp=true http://www.vamworld.com/1884-CC+VAM-2
Every Morgan dollar is a VAM. There are about 15 assigned for the 1884-CC, so it would be best if you posted images of the entire coin. Chris
It may be easy, but collectors new to VAMming should get into the habit of examining the entire coin, not just one or two small spots. I mentioned this for the benefit of those newcomers to VAM's. Chris
Chris is correct. Every Morgan and Peace dollar have VAM assignments. Check VAMworld website. It's all about die pairings, and Messrs Van Allen and Mallis worked tirelessly for God knows how long to compile their catalog. Excellent background info at that site. Check it out..you'll quickly pick it up. The idea is to eliminate possibilities to correctly identify the VAM. For example, if you can see that you are looking at a far date, you can narrow the possible VAM assignments. If you can see the mint mark in a high and right-leaning position, you can further narrow the possibilities. This way, you do not have to look at each variation. Some coins are easy to identify without any website help. 1880-CC VAMs 4-5-6-7 are great examples. Same for 1893-S...ain't but 2 VAMs. But if you want a real challenge, check out 1921 and 1921-D (hundreds). Oy vey!
Heck, I'm putting more time on average into numismatics than that, and this is his life's work. It would not surprise me if close to double that number is more accurate.
Well that's working off of a 24hr/day number. If we say a workday consists of 12hr then the number stands with your doubling
It's a rare week I don't manage 25 hours on numismatics - not all strict "scholarship," I count my time keeping track of the varieties I watch on Ebay and other sites. I've been at it for ten hours today alone, and won't be doing anything else while I'm on vacation this week. I'll put 60-80 hours in this week alone. That's ~1300 hours a year, and I've been doing it continuously since 2004. Close to 15,000 hours, and I know I've underestimated the time while I was actively Moderating. And Leroy Van Allen's level of obsession makes me look casual.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but all are considered VAM-1 until proven otherwise. Is that right @messydesk ? Chris
VAM 1 is considered a die pairing with no discernable features to be able to give it a specific classification. Its like a catch-all for generic die pairings.
