I went to a bank on Saturday and left with various rolls of dollar coins. To my surprise, I came upon quite a few dollar coins that have been plated in what I believe to be 24K gold:

    Gold plated presidential dollars.jpg

There's 29 total such coins; all are different presidents.

This isn't something I'd usually care a whole lot about except to say that they appear to sell for pretty good $$$ on eBay, averaging $5 - $8 each depending on the president.

There were some other good finds as well such as 2002 - 2008 Sacagaweas in mint state and an uncirculated set of unplated presidential dollars, including a couple of tough George H.W. Bush coins.

Most of these coins were originally bought at a nice premium; whomever turned them in at face value has taken a decent loss (unless inherited).

I'm not sure if I'll be keeping them all or letting them go; at least I know that there's a stronger-than-expected market for them with collectors, whom I'd rather they go to than just releasing them back into circulation.

That's one well-preserved Buffalo! And I know 1929-S isn't one of the premium dates, but any time I see a 1920s SF nickel, it makes my heart beat a little faster...

Stopped by the bank today. I was going to yesterday but it didn't work out. Glad it was today.

    46 large dollar coins
5 cwr of halves... 3 rolls were solid 1967 40%!

    That will work!

    Nickel box #29:

Two fake-outs for nickels I needed:
Got a 1944-P instead of the 1944-S I needed, but well, silver war nickel, can't get too mad at that.

    Got a 1939... instead of the 1939-S I needed.

Got a buffalo nickel that I think is a 1916-S; hard to read the date. It could also be a 1915-S or a 1918-S. Really need Nic-a-date for this one (got one on order). I have a few dateless buffaloes I want to nic-a-date; will report those when it arrives!

Other interesting find, 1990 Singapore 20 cents.

Did get a nice 1988-P to upgrade the album.

    Other pre-1960 finds:
    1940
    1946
    1946-D
    1948
    1949
    1949-D
    1953-D
1953-S (save any San Francisco on general principle lol)
    1955-D
    1957-D
    1958-D x2
    1959-D x3

Pretty good I think! But definitely hitting diminishing returns. Will do at least one more box though for an even 30.

On the topic of nic-a-date: I've found that I get equally good restoration from a soak in white vinegar, with the added benefit that it restores detail across the entire coin. Of course, it also leaves you with a details coin, but at least it doesn't leave the unsightly blotch that nic-a-date does.

I can imagine someone saying it's better to leave the rest of the coin unaltered, but I don't think I've ever found anyone who actually prefers the nic-a-date look...

Way I figure, it's causing some damage either way, so I may as well do the thing that causes less overall damage. A little bit of damage at the date is better than damage across the entire surface.

A nic-a-dated coin is considered damaged, and worth less than one that isn't of course, but a coin with an identifiable date is worth more than one that can't be identified.

How long of a soak do you recommend? I might try one for laugh and giggles!

    A few hours.

I'd say start one and check it after the first hour, then after two hours, then four, eight, and so on. It's not going to give results in minutes, but if you don't see anything after a day or two, you're probably not going to get anything.

For me it takes at least 3 days. Once it took 2 weeks for the date to become easily readable on a really worn and corroded nickel.

Okay, I may be misremembering. I do remember, though, that three months was too long, unless you want to shrink your nickel down to the size of a cent...

My latest nickel box search produced a few fun finds. Leading the way, displaying two opposite conditions, were a well preserved 1940 Jefferson and a well worn no date Buffalo. Other notable finds were a 1943 and 1947 from San Francisco and two 2009-D. The early decade count were six from the 1940’s and three from the 1950’s. Additionally, there were twenty seven from 2024 (all D), seven 1968-1970 from San Francisco, and one 1988 from Canada.
