To be honest I think this is one of my firsts of 2017. Time seems to slip by and I lose all track of everything before I realize it. At any rate I have to thank JA for working with me on this one. I seem to have more Postumus coins than any other Emporer. This is my third coin obtained from YOC that is part of the same hoard. Two of which are Postumus. The other is Victorinus. I've spent the better part of the weekend trying to capture decent photos. Not just this coin but a few others. After frustration I'm going to use JA's pics for this post. Much better than mine. The silvering is really pretty cool. Postumus AE Billon 22mm, 2.5g, 6h Lugdunum 262 AD IMP C POSTVMVS PF AVG Radiate, cuirassed bust right PM TR PIIII COSIII PP Mars walking right with trophy and transverse spear RIC Vb 57 I did get a somewhat decent shot of the reverse. As usual I welcome your input and please share what ever you feel like. But I wouldn't mind seeing some of your different reverses.
Postumus is amongst my favorite Romans, partly because of the mystery that surrounds so much of his life. Great coin!
Thanks. Yeah everyone loves a mysterious person . Up until now I was thinking I had more Diocletian than any others. As far as 3rd CAD goes anyway. I always thought to be partial to military leader type.
I had a HUGE Postumus mystery solved by @YOC ... he CLEANED my green gunky coin and revealed it was actually SILVERED when struck! Pre-Magic by the YOC-man: AFTER the MAGIC: (sorry for my horrid pics) RI Postumus 259-268 CE Antoninianus Cologne Providentia
I liked the mixed look it has. Already have a decent one of him though. He does have some charm to his portraits. Postumus (260 - 269 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG, Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. R: FIDES EXERCITVS Four military standards, hand on top of second, eagle on third. Lugdunum (Lyon) mint. Struck 266 A.D. 3.8g 20mm RIC V 303; Cunetio 2432; Elmer 417; RSC 65
Huge difference @Alegandron Pishpash & YOC have that touch. I'd love to know their secret. I've seen that one other time. For some forgotten reason I passed on it. I probably had my sight on another and figured I'd have another chance at it. Sure eventually I will.
Nice coins there. My only Antoninianus so far.Love those Postumus portraits. When I first got this I thought Postumus meant a dead guy. Dead Antoninianus Learned a lot since then. Postumus Antoninianus, struck 263 AD at Cologne mint. Obv: IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: PROVIDENTIA AVG, Providentia standing left, holding globe and sceptre. 3,27 g, 20 mm. RIC 323; Elmer 337; AGK (corr.) 69; Cunetio 2412
Great color and readability. Overall nice coin ya got there 49er. How many ancient coins you up to now? 40-50??
Nice! I really like the reverse too. Put me down as another one who's fond of Postumus and his coinage. It doesn't feel right if too much time passes without a new Postumus coin. This one is my most recent, picked up a couple months ago... an early emission with a leaner but still genial portrait, and an extremely buff Hercules on the reverse. POSTUMUS Billon Antoninianus. 4.34g, 23.8mm. Trier mint, 1st emission, 3rd phase, AD 260-261. RIC V 64; Mairat 12-7; AGK 25; RSC 9. O: IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. R: HERC DEVSONIENSI, Hercules standing right, holding bow and lion's skin in left hand and club in right hand.
After spending hundreds of years together in the ground, its funny to think after all the miles traveled to share the same safe space. Last year purchase from JA, a YOC coin. The OP coin & this are from same hoard.
