I have only become a serious coin collector over the past few yrs and I would like to
learn/sharpen my coin grading skills and become less dependent on TPGs. The summer Colorado seminar offers a ''part 1'' beginner and a part 2 intermediate class. How do I decide where I qualify (I only have time to take one)? I do not want to be bored if part one is too basic but I also do not want to delude myself about my grading skills by jumping into part 2. Those of you who have knowledge of these courses, which course do you recommend?

My husband has been out there a few times in each of the grading classes. I'm not sure who is out there this year but it's probably the same as last year. The coins you'll see are the same so you'll want to go with the best instructors.

As for taking Basic or Intermediate, it is probably best to start at the beginning. I took the basic class with Mike Ellis. DO NOT take the advanced class first. My husband had some good stories about some dealers way over their heads. Anyway, they probably won't let you. I have not been out to that one yet.

As to which class: Call the teacher of the Intermediate course and tell him your skills. Let him steer you in the right direction. I think you'll need his approval anyway. When my husband returns I'll tell him about this thread.
