Half dime and nickels

    I was in a local coin shop and saw a few half dimes. I was wondering, were nickels and half dimes made during the same time since they would be the same value.

    You really should buy a copy of the Red Book. It can answer thousands of questions for you.

    Welcome to the forum!

    What we know as "nickels" today began in 1866 with the Shield Nickel and they continue to run to the present day.

    Half dimes were made of silver and began much earlier in 1794, but they ended in 1873.

    So yes, there was a little overlap, approximately 6 - 7 years, for half dimes and nickels.

    Yes, you could look this up as others have suggested, but a short answer never hurt anyone, especially since many of us know this stuff off the top of our heads.
