Over the past few years there has been a massive influx of these coins on the market from what must have been a significant hoard. This development came to my attention when an Israeli seller sent photos to me in 2023 of a group he was trying to sell, by individual coin or as a lot. Here's a photo of the lot: Recently I obtained a Tigranes II tetradrachm in CNG's Electronic Auction 590. I think this example is an earlier minting. The portrait appears more youthful compared to others, the relief seems higher for this type and the metal quality is actually decent. The obverse strike is very nice, and the reverse is slightly off-center. Here's the CNG lot description: KINGS of ARMENIA. Tigranes II ‘the Great’. 95-56 BC. AR Tetradrachm (27mm, 15.31 g, 12h). Tigranocerta mint. Struck circa 80-68 BC. Draped bust right, wearing jeweled diadem and tiara decorated with star between two eagles / Tyche of Antioch seated right on rock, holding laurel branch; below, river-god Orontes swimming right; monogram on rock; all within wreath. SCADA Group 7, obv. die A49; Kovacs 75.3; M&D 12; CAA 23; AC 33. Lightly toned, some minor marks on obverse. Good VF. So, post your Tigranes II coins or anything else you wish. Thanks
I've always kind of wanted one of those, but the price has always been too high. That's a very nice example you have! It's a great acquisition.
Yes, they are expensive, but they used to be even more before the recent hoard. The situation is similar to that of owls, plentiful but generally pricey. If you can score one for around $500 in decent condition you're doing okay. During the last days of Roma Numismatics, when they were emptying their inventory, there was a small run of Tigranes II tetradrachms in their E-Sale 119 auction. Here's one that I acquired from that auction. The total, with the 20% buyer's fee and currency conversion, came to around $560. This was lot 540.
