Got out to the LCS today and was able to snag this beauty for my type set. 1838 Coronet Head in (seemingly) uncirculated condition. There's a bit of rim chatter going on here and a die crack around 2:00 but this is a solid upgrade for my 7070. The current slot holder looks like it got run over by a tractor so this one is a huge upgrade. I'll be dropping her into a nice little acetone bath tonight before she settles into her new home later.

Honorable mention is this '92-CC Morgan, which will be happily placed in my album until I find an upgrade for her. There was an '89-CC available, too, but it wasn't very eye-catching (and cleaned) but I might end up going back soon just to get it anyways. It's not every day you see one available in the raw, so hopefully it's still there if I manage to get back soon!

Just going on the die crack, does anyone here have the book on Newcomb varieties? If so, is this a Newcomb-4? I see the crack is also at the date, but very faint.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I can't help with the variety on the cent, but I will say... based on the disruptions in luster in the field, I'd grade it AU-58. It is very just barely circulated.

In particular, look at the fields behind her head between the stars on the obverse, and between the One and wreath on the reverse.

Is the chatter on the rim normal on these, or would that be considered damage? I don't know enough about the series to judge that.

On the error side it looks like you have a Ragged Rim, and a bit of corrosion on both sides. The fields and high points have good eye appeal. A small anomaly just above the lip. Otherwise, a very nice replacement coin, good for you.

I would be suspect of any Morgan dollar that is raw, just to many Chinese fakes
    out there :(

That's another reason why I like to confirm the VAM on them. Essentially authenticates it when it matches up.

I think it is an N-4 after looking at a few examples showing the crack around the 9th star. Nice pickups.

Nice coin and the die crack adds to the coin. Great pickup. The ‘92-CC is nice for the grade. If I remember correctly the ‘89-CC is a common date.

Interesting. Is a "ragged rim" a known thing on these? The rim looks so beat up my first thought was that it was roughly removed from an encasement of some kind.

I tend to think that due to the size and weight of silver dollars the rims received more hits than other smaller coins.

I've been very cautious about buying Carson City Morgans. So far I've only bought one raw one and ANACS graded it MS63, so okay there. I see a lot of CCs on eBay but it's always in the back of my mind about the fakes, even from experienced sellers. A lot of the legit Carson City coins are either well worn or wallet busters.

'89-CC is a tougher date, only 350,000 made. Even in low grades they command high prices. The one I saw was beat up and cleaned, but priced accordingly. I didn't get there today to grab it, but hopefully I'll get a chance on Monday.

Updated pictures of the large cent (below) after her first acetone bath. She got a distilled water rinse, gentle drying, and right back into another bath with fresh acetone.

You are correct about the 1989-CC Morgan. I have all of them except the 1885-CC and that’s a tough one to find. Too many Morgan CC’s for me to remember correctly.

PS. If the priced it right, I’d buy that one as they are hard to find. Best wishes.

Ive got the '85-CC in a GSA holder (my profile picture) but lots of the elusive ones remain on my want-list. Got a 1899 (P) in a lower MS and a '95-O in VF-XF range but it's tough to find Morgans that are in decent condition and raw recently. I'm trying to (eventually) assemble a BU set of Morgans that won't necessarily break the bank.

If I've gotta buy a details coin for a few, then so be it (looking at you '93-S) but it's my intention to assemble it, and I'll deal with it as I progress through my additions. I should be ok.so long as the wife doesn't find the receipts for the coins, although I do believe that I've gotten decent pricing so far. Maybe that'll be a nice fallback to land on. Yes, definitely that.

@KBBPLL, planchet missing pieces allowing for an irregular shape and often includes the entire rim, depth of gauges, and the direction of the abrasions, tell me it's a ragged rim error coin in my opinion.

I've got 3 1999P Morgans. Bought all raw. Came back graded 53, 58, and MS60 cleaned. MS is a real PIA. I'm done with that date, might sell all of those and buy a PCGS MS 64 and call it a day. :p
