Ok the 5 are in and the 5 are weighed out. 1. 127.7gr 2. 151.6gr 3. 136.4gr 4. 150.4gr 5. 131.4gr So at a guess 2 and 4 will be dollars, 3 should be a 1/2 dollar, 5 a quarter and 1 a nickle... of course at this point these are all just guesses. So there they are and I going to go forward and open box 1 now (the lightest of the 5) Yup yup box 1 is a Nickle And while not a "win" I am not unhappy even if I did overpay a bit.. and 1883 Cents Nickle MS63 (about a $300 dollar coin) Now the question is which box to open next (will do another around supper time)
How 'bout a reverse shot of that '83? And no 'racketeering' mind you. I think 'vault box' is quite the racket but I ain't no gambler.....(devil)
Ok, I'll make it simple.. I opened a 2nd box and while it was a very pretty coin.. pricewise it was a big loser. So I opened the 3rd box and got semi-zonked.. 3 boxes open averaging out to 50% value vs cost.... I just couldn't do it had to open the 4th box on the peeking stage I saw a red core.. so i decided to stop set it aside and open the 5th instead (don't ask me why I was miffed/tizzied so did as i wanted then lol) Anyhoo.. Again at the peeking stage I see a 2nd Red core... So as you can see I ended up opening all 5 tonight (bad weasel!) But wait before I reveal all the prizes there's more..... Total cost of 5 VaultBox Horizon 2025 boxes.... $1875 NGC list value of the 5 coins I recieved........... $1880 So... Once again I have to say I broke even 4 of the coins will find empty holes in my type sets so I did well in the long run.. The 5th coin will also go into the typeset replacing an existant coin of lower grade. So here's the dirt/coins.. The Morgan will probably get it's own post tomorrow but I will say now it is the one coin in the lot that I do NOT agree with the grade on the slab.... Picture not the best, but those bands are full, complete and better then any i've previously seen
And this is why I don't gamble more than a couple bucks on a lottery ticket every couple months... you will always be disappointed. I guess if they "fill holes" it isn't a total loss... but you are merely accepting the coins sent to you, rather than choosing the coin that appeals to you.
As long as you enjoy doing it have fun with it Weasel. I really like the strike on the obverse on that 1923 peace dollar. Seems like every peace dollar I look at the strike is so flat on the hair I pass on them.
I really like the idea of not knowing what is in the box and the suspense and drama of opening a box but then I would not be too pleased if I ended up with mediocre coins I already had, and my choice had been taken away. I regret buying a fair number of coins after the event and wondering why did I do that? It would be great to see you open a real "winner" @mrweaseluv and I'm glad you broke even. I guess the Vaultbox sellers must know that if they put overpriced junk in the boxes they would soon lose their market so that must take some of the risk out of it. I wouldn't mind breaking even but wouldn't like to lose hundreds of dollars. Thanks for sharing your experience it's really interesting and helps form a view. I think if the subject was right I would do this myself.
Thanks for the weights Weasel. Now the meat of my story I was 6th in line at open for two boxes and site wouldn't accept my card rebooted and tried 3 different cards still wouldn't work got a 505 gateway once screen shot it, contacted customer service after 5-6 emails back and forth, called me on land line apologized. I said you probably can't help me as sold-out in 1 1/2 hours. Suprise she said they keep 20 from each auction just for this reason, mailed out Friday AM! US Mint could learn from Vault box!
I did well, scored an red core 1818 capped bust 50 cent piece (sorry, no pics, gotta learn how to do that) graded AU-58 with an instant offer of $1450.00. More than makes up from 2 previous busts. I wish I could exhibit Weasel's patience, I tore into my box before it left the Fedex driver's hand like a 6 year old at Christmas. The one piece of advice I could offer is keep your expectations in check.
I would never participate in these, they are mostly high-grade items, and I like ones that have "been around". However, mrweaseluv I greatly enjoy reading your posts and join in your excitement - thank you for sharing!
