Almost seems like another metal is blasted on top. I have no idea. I would love to hear some other opinions. Thank you.

PMD looks like it spent time in a corrosive environment.

I am in the pmd dep. also. What does it weigh? Looks like it was attached to something.

Oh, here they are. Please have your duplicate thread removed. And it looks like someone played with a little acid.

I don't think any part of the original coin has been removed; looks much more like something was added on top, something like solder or epoxy, etc.

If some metal had been removed, you would not see "D ST" and "F DOLLAR," in clear unobstructed lettering.

I think it's a botched attempt to make jewelry. The solder went wild in this coin.

I would have thought solder would be a slightly different color.

Looks like solder to me. It even has flux residue around the edges. May have been soldered to a belt buckle or the like. Does the front show wear?

There are many different formulations with varying flux cores.

Thank you everyone for your input. The front has hardly any wear. I found it in my father in laws old things and just wanted to be sure.

Its heavy by 2 Grams, could have been a belt buckle,

    It's heavy by 2 Grams ??

Redbook says clad quarters weigh 5.7 grams, so it's heavy by 6 grams. That's more than double the normal weight, which doesn't seem possible, so maybe the scale's inaccurate.
More likely you looked up the weight for a clad half dollar, 11.7 grams is about right.

The coin in question IS a half dollar.

If it is solder, could you heat it and cook it off?
