I guess these days the spots on modern silver would be called "milk spots". Taken
380 years to acquire them though!

What should I look for on my 1899 dime to differentiate the reverse of 1900-01? Numista had nothing and AI says they’re the same.

It's only been published in the BCCS journal (gosh, six years ago), and AI is worthless. You would find it nowhere else that I'm aware of. Essentially in 1900 all the leaf vein detail and the corn kernels changed. The easiest ID is the prominent vein in the left-most leaf. You should be able to see the difference in the two images I posted. Philly started using the new hub early, I'm guessing in December 1899, perhaps to test the new hub in production but more likely they just needed more dies due to the huge mintage. It's essentially the same reverse used from 1901-1916 except that in 1901 Barber added an extra fold to the right ribbon end, which was discovered in 1980 by John McCloskey and you'll find that change documented. PM me and I can send you my BCCS article.
