H guys came across this odd wheat penny. It doesn’t look like lain old wear and tear made the surface almost completely smooth on the majority of the obverse. The last half of the word liberty is gone. The date is gone except for the tip of a one and maybe the tip of the three and it also looks like it has maybe a cud or maybe that’s just PMD and I’m still not good enough at knowing the difference. Then at the bottom, I found this 2024 dime that is definitely not PMD. I’m just not sure what it is. Any help that could be provided will be greatly appreciated
The main reason is that it is raised and has its own form. Like it is, or was, an object itself before somehow ending up in/on the planchette somehow. You can tell it’s something that is extra, not something that was taken away by a dent, Knick, scratch, applying acid, or any other severe abuse. Something like that takes away not adds to. It’s just plain logic You tell me how you think this little smooth tail shaped thing showed up on the outside of this dime. what is it with coin collectors? 80% of the time I ask a question on a coin forum. There’s always some mart ass that fancies themselves funny in the bunch. Congrats! That was record time!
That settles it then. It's definitely PMD. You dime took a serious hit that moved metal from the rim across the surface. Another big hit left of the P also moved a chunk of metal. I don't know what's going on with the cent but you'll have to post better images of both sides, and not pictures of pixels on your monitor.
Not sure about the first coin but the 2024 coin is PMD. If you look closely at the rim and then again to the left of the P mint mark you can see where the metal has been push from the right to the left side. I will add that you can see a fingerprint on Lincoln.
Thank you for clarifying. Case & point. Coin collector types are knobs. Got it! I will add though, I know there are those of you out there that are coin Collector types, but aren’t knobs. because I’ve gotten friendly advice, and met nice people here.
is a fingerprint being seen in(not on)the coin a known error? I hadn’t ever heard that. I have seen Lincoln cents that definitely appeared to have a fingerprint but I never inspected close enough to see if the print was just on the surface. I had never read that was something to look for. Thanks very much for a helpful comment I don’t come here and pretend to be any kind of expert, my comment, “I know it’s not PMD“ is nothing but an issue of semantics. I spoke wrongly using the word know, when I should’ve said, “really don’t think”. I still don’t understand how the rim line of a coin that is solid metal already gets moved and stays smooth like that, and then sticks back to the side of the coin that confuses me if that doesn’t happen during the minting process, when the metal is soft, it totally just doesn’t seem logical to me. That’s all. I’m upfront about my being very much a novice at this(even though I’ve been doing it(at various levels of involvement during different times, certainly not professionally or singularly), for about 15 years I know that’s nothing compared to people out there that have been doing it for more than twice that long. I come here for that reason. I know those people are here and I come here, hoping for their generosity, in helping out a novice. I don’t come here to get smart ass comments. I don’t deserve them. If I was pretending to be an expert when I’m not, or acting like a know it all, then yes, I would deserve the trolling. I definitely don’t deserve the treatment.
