Hi, I am unable to determine if this 1933 penny has a mint error or not. I've posted the obverse and reverse. The obverse looks fine, but the reverse has several letters of "United States of America" that were either never minted or purposely removed. I don't know which. Can you help me? Thanks!
What occurred is that when the blank is struck the image on the Obverse of Lincoln's bust raises up on the coin which makes the other side (opposite side) in that area sink in so there's not enough surface to properly strike what's missing. Common issue actually.
Thank you @paddyman98 Given the condition of the coin and the error, could you (or others) hazard a guess as to what it's worth?
I think it's posible that the OP's coin is a Struck Through Debris/Grease. I say that due to it being well struck at the top of the O of ONE, which is the area for the usual companian weak spot, and the area size of the missing letters.
I think that is is filled in area of the die, maybe with something like greese. The area opposite Lincoln's coat theory does not work. If it were true, that area would be weak on large numbers of Lincoln Cents, which isn't. It's an error, but not a valuable one. In fact the coin might be worth more without it.
I also thought this was a partial greaser. The coin is a decent date and in very good condition. $16 in AU $25 in low MS.
