I'm looking over a few of my MS Eisenhower coins, both Clads and Silvers and I'm trying to figure out how do you grade these things? They seem like such rough coins. Look at this one for example which is a 1971 S Silver MS coin still in the government wrapper. How is this graded? Ruben
these are blowups http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/ike_1971_ms_silver_reverse_30.jpg http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/ike_1971_obverse_ms_silver_20.jpg http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/ike_1971_obverse_ms_silver_24.jpg http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/ike_1971_obverse_ms_silver_25.jpg <--- Good Close up of Obverse http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/ike_1971_reverse_ms_silver_21.jpg http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/ike_1971_reverse_ms_silver_23.jpg http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/ike_1971_reverse_ms_silver_26.jpg http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/proof_set_3_1963_dollar_reverse_9.jpg http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/proof_set_3_1963_dollar_reverse_8.jpg http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/proof_set_3_1963_dollar_reverse_3.jpg http://www2.mrbrklyn.com/images/jul_30_2007/proof_set_3_1963_dollar_obverse_2.jpg These last ones are obviously not 1963 dollars as the name of the image says. Its been a lot of photo editing of late. Ruben
These are graded a little tougher than the clads since they come nicer. The picture isn't good enough to really tell but my gut tells me that the pictured coin is a very gemmy piece that has more than its share of mark- ing. To get high grades these have to be very clean and to get the high- est grades they also have to be gemmy. It's probably an MS-65. The clad coins are all tough in this grade. Morgans outnumber Ikes in gem by more than 1000: 1.
I've only got one worthy of display. The rest a just trinkets to give nieces and nephews gifts during Christmas and the Holidays. There was an excellent article I recall in COINage which addressed this to the letter though... Maybe a year or two ago.
I bought a seven peice set of ike proofs for around $30 about three/four years ago. The 71-74 are silver and are in immaculate condition, the 77 however is covered with fingermarks.
But what places do you look for strike, wear and detail? On a Morgan I immediately look at the Eagle Brest and the Hair Curls. Ruben
Ruben, Here is a 73S Silver I have for reference. I'll see what others think, then I'll tell you what NGC says it is. It does have a lot more luster than is evident in the pics.
Strike usually isn't much of an issue with silver Ikes in lower grades. Extremely weak strikes will show up in the eagle's feathers but usually you'll see most of the weakness in the peripheral lettering and date.
Grading this coin from the photos is impossible. Could be anywhere from a 62 to a 67...Mike For high resolution pics of high-grade Ikes, please feel free to paruse my collection: http://www.pbase.com/miker/mint_state_ikes
And to find wear you always look at the high points first, same with any coin. And high points are always indicated for each coin in the ANA Grading Guide - so if you don't have one, get one
Tha man is bald. What are the high points? The cheek, ear and forhead? How much is the ANA guild? Should I break them from the plastic? I hate that plastic. Ruben
Ruben do you own a copy of the book ? I assume not, that's why I suggested that you get one. The book cost about $16. The high points on the obv are the cheek bone, the jaw line and the neck line. On the rev they are the top of the right wing, the back of the eagle's head and the left leg. I would leave the coins in the original package but that is me.
I don't own a copy yet. I'll pick one up this week. I though that you might need ANA membership to get one. I've seen some websites with some grading photo's as well. Thanks Ruben
