This bill, issued by the Merchant's Bank, Trenton, NJ, Nov 20, 1861. Well circulated. What's it worth?

About all I can tell you is that's it's in poor condition, Civil War Currency, Obsolete from New Jersey, issued by the Merchant's Bank in Trenton, NJ on the date you provided. In it's current condition, $25.00 max.

I really like your note, I guess the fact that I was born in raised in Paterson, NJ kind of helps. The condition of the note reduces the value, I'd think that Collecting Nut's $25 is reasonable. Here's three of mine, Paterson note never issued-no date, Trenton, NJ $2 1824, and Trenten 5c Note 1863 (during the Civil War). Nice lot of NJ notes. I'd part with the $3., fair price. I lived in NJ (Scudder Falls) as a kid. My other bills are confederate, odd-ball stuff: $1.25, DC note 1863; $5. State of GA; $1. State of Al; etc.

  8. I was fortunate to acquire a set of the People's Bank of Paterson $6, $7, $8 & $9 remainders upon my father's passing many years ago. He had owned the set since at least the 1950s or very early 1960s. They were the visual part of an opening joke he would use in speeches he’d give at various civic clubs and gatherings when invited. I've been told over the years that all of these notes are remainders from the 1830s and that no issued specimens exist! However, as is obvious, my father was a "rag-picker" from way, way back! And along with the unissued remainder set there was an apparently issued $7 note dated May 10, 1833. I've not been able to get a straight answer from the few dealers with whom I've spoken, other than their expressed interest in placing it in auction. While going to auction seems logical and might be the eventual best option, I would still like to know more than I presently do. Do you know who the expert(s) is/are on New Jersey obsolete notes with whom I should consult before I proceed further? Your direction will be sincerely appreciated.

I envy the collection of Paterson, NJ notes you have Sam_I_am.MiaFL, if you ever decide to sell them, I'd like a shot at the lot. I looked through my books on currency of that period and I can't find any information on them.

  10. Thank you for your interest. I will assume your interest would be in the $6, $7, $8 & $9 Peoples' Bank of Patterson remainders set, with the issued $7 not in play at this point.
The notes are usually referenced as follows:
    $6 Criswell P-156 Haxby 438-G40
    $7 Criswell P-157 Haxby 438-G42
    $8 Criswell P-158 Haxby 438-G44
    $9 Criswell P-159 Haxby 438-G46
I will have to "dig them out" and work up a price for you. It'll probably take me a week or ten days. In the interim, do you still reside in New Jersey? ...and might you know a New Jersey obsoletes specialist who can help me with researching the "issued $7"? Thanks, Sam_I_am

No, I no longer live in New Jersey, I moved to a warmer climate when I retired, but once a Jerseyite always a Jerseyite. I am interested, in the New Jersey notes, but as a retired person, I am on a budget.

  12. I too am retired... but as a result of a not-so-nice divorce following more than three decades of what I thought was a good marriage and losing my 401k in the process, I must inform you up-front that the sale of my personal collection is what finances my retirement which is far from extravagant. I'm not looking to stick-it to anyone else but I shall duly research what is a fair market price in order to be fair to myself, as well as you. As far as your budget goes, I will be happy to work-out something should you require payment over time.
As I am somewhat of a Luddite relative to this kind of website, the next question is how do I give you access to my direct e-mail address without releasing/publishing it to everyone and their mother? I believe further discussion regarding the Paterson NJ set should be private.

I'm fairly new also, but I believe there's something called a Private Message that is only seen by the person it is sent to. I have received several from people who are reluctant to post to this forum for fear of getting less than favorable comments on their posts.

  16. The perennial and persistent popularity of the unusual denomination Peoples' Bank of Paterson $6, $7, $8 & $9 obsolete bank note set is undoubtedly attributable, at least in part, to its being an obvious extremely visual demonstrable example of the punch-line to the joke:
"How do you make change of a $15 bill??? With a $6 and a $9, or $7 and an $8!!!"
There are several variants to the stories that may precede the punch-line.

  17. Hey, TheMont,
I thought I initiated a "Private Message/Conversation" yesterday evening following the instructions suggested by Michael K above. However, as I've not received a response, I'm not sure if I did it incorrectly or if you've not been available to respond. Please advise.
