I've been getting the itch lately after reading about ya'll's success and decided to grab a box of nickels on my way home. 3rd roll just gave up a 1950 D!

Sorry about the flip, but most of my keepers go right into either a flip or a tube right after I find them.

Numis, I've searched 95,000 nickels and have not found a '50-D. You should celebrate!!!

I've searched for years and found just the one 50-D. Yours is nicer than mine. Congratulations! :)

I know ya'll don't want to hear it, but I've never really looked for it before last night. I couldn't believe it when I found it though! It was definitely one of those moments where my wife thinks I'm crazy because I'm freaking out about some old coin that looks like the rest of them. [emoji13]

It's mostly luck. There is some strategy that can help, picking out of the way older banks, etc, but where the rare coins are is pretty much random.

I found my 50-D in a small town branch office of my bank. The teller was very surprised that I wanted to buy a box of nickels. The box had been sitting around in the bank's main vault for around 3 years. I could tell that by the fact that the newest almost AU nickels in the box were 3 years old. Also, it was a Brinks box, which my bank rarely uses (they mostly get Loomis or String & Son boxes).

Anyway... I never did make another significant find from that branch. But I have gotten a few very nice buffalo nickels from my main branch and they order fresh boxes every week. <shrugs>

Awesome @NumisRookie , the key of all keys for the Jefferson nickel series. I'm still looking for a 50D as well as the elusive 38D and S, and 39D and S

I haven't found a '50-D roll hunting either but I've found plenty of others coins roll hunting that I've been able to sell for a profit and cover the 10 bucks it cost me to buy a '50-D on eBay.

So in a way the end result of my coin roll hunting was the same but through different means.

Congrats on the 70S, that's awesome. My boxes per week will be cut in half from 8 to 4 because Wells is getting rid of their coin machines. This might cause me to quit once this happens.

Any credit unions you can join?

I'm already a member of two banks, I don't know if I can do a third. The main reason for joining would be to dump halves.

I don't know how time consuming it is to go through a box of halves, but I would imagine it is difficult to keep up with minimum wage pace. Granted, you don't have to actually go to a job and take orders from some dingbat (boss).

I also suspect another major problem is gas used to go to and from banks. It would be great to have a bunch of banks within walking distance and then just get a wheelbarrow, hahaha.

Takes 20 minutes to go through a box. You just look at the edges for silver rims. My route to and from work had 6 banks that I used for my dumping and getting boxes. It's cut in half now and I will have to drive more miles if I want to continue.
