That's a fine piece of history right there. Makes me want to take a metal detector to Gettysburg. Lots of loose change there I suspect. How does that get only a 60 when I don't see any hits or marks on the coin?
Heritage listing from 2004 says "Although attractive to the naked eye, this piece reveals numerous miniscule abrasions when inspected under a lens." I think it deserves better too, but proof grading seems to be a different thing. I don't own any patterns but I find them fascinating. Good score @Tall Paul
Patterns are a fascinating rabbit hole. I have been fortunate in assembling a denomination set that is only missing a twenty cent and a half cent pattern. I am also grateful that the dealers with whom I work are willing to offer generous lay-a-way terms. In another month I will get a half cent pattern off of lay-a-way. I never thought I would be able to find a half cent pattern since there are only two varieties and one of them is unique. Thank you for the information from the listing on Heritage, I admit that once I found photos I could post I didn't look any further into the listing.
Went to Harlan J Berk’s downtown Chicago store on a recent weekday and traded some modern silver dollar comms for two coins. One is this basic VG 1845 Seated dime for the type set.
Nothing fantastic, but adds to my Franklin Half Set that I recently decided to put together. Both coins are about the same color, but I took the pictures in 2 different settings, so the '48 looks darker, but it's really not. 1948 D and 1955 P.
Must be nice to live close to them. I wish I did I would save a bundle on shipping. I have always been a fan of HJB. Did you look at the Valkyries collection in person? Window shopping is free. I did manage to score one from the collection for my type set (see below) - so far a lot of proofs. And a bunch I just can't afford.
That takes me back. I may have gotten coins from them at their original location in Joliet. I also made my first coin purchases at the coin shop that used to be at their current location on Clark St. My dad's office was just around the corner overlooking the Picasso plaza (early 70s).
Won this at this month's coin club raffle. got this Kennedy variety on ebay this week and got this 1973 Bahamas Proof set at our monthly coin club auction.
My latest acquistion. Sellers photos, all I had to go on. There are a few Morgan clashes that I'm always interested in. This one won't beat my 1886 PCGS MS 67 Vam 1-C in my collection, but I'll take it anyway, making it my 3rd speciman. It has little to no luster and I suspect it was over dipped. But for about 50 bucks I'll add it and get it graded and attributed. It's a weak 1-C clash speciman but it has other identifying markers that led me to buying it. .
Purchased this recently, still waiting for it to be shipped. It also was the last coin I needed to complete the five coin Hawaiian set. AU-58
The third and final Walking Liberty Half Dollar I was seeking for 1943, this one from the Denver mint:
I was pleasantly surprised when I received this coin yesterday. Seller's photos worked to my advantage, coin is blast white and screams luster. It was a terrible photo. I'll come back and post PCGS photos when it comes back from grading. Looks minimum MS65. Last time I said that and sent this same year and mint came back MS67. I've got another 86 in gem with the same VAM to send in for grading as well. I've been lucky AF finding these sleepers on fleaBay. When I get these two back I'll post the trio all together and hope I can take a passable photo. Here are the die markers.
The third and final 1935 Winged Liberty Head dime to complete that year, this one from the mint in Denver. As a whole, only the Quarter from Denver and Half-Dollar from San Francisco remain to complete the set from Lincoln Cent through Peace Dollar.
Just picked this up a 1866 Nickel with Rays. Those of you that knows more than I do (that would be all of you), please give your opinion as to grade. I hurriedly took a couple of pictures, for that i apologize. Thanks in advance, Kenneth
I would see this coin as a VF/XF via condition. You can get a rough price range on "Shield Nickels - Price Charts & Coin Values" on Shield Nickels - Price Charts & Coin Values on https://www.usacoinbook.com/ Do not go by the samples others have submitted for sell, as most are over valued by the sellers as usual in such deals. IMO, its your decision!! Jim
Thank you very much. I felt like it would possibly grade that high, but wasn't sure? It looks very good in hand. I gave $40 for it and felt like I got a very good deal?
