Thanks Frank. I was thinking of sending that one in for a grade. What do you think. I couldnt get a clear picture of the reverse for some reason.
This is one of my favorite coin purchases. I found a Mel Fisher store near where I live. He's the guy who discovered the resting place of the Atocia Spanish treasure ship. This particular 1/2 Reale was found at the wreck of the war ship El Cazador which sunk in 1784 alongside the famed Atocia. The coin is dated 1783 and is graded a 1. It's kind of neat owning such a storied piece of history.
my first 3 cent piece. i forget the date. you can barely read it. bought it from a friend for 2$, lol
Love the coin, but let me give you a heads up. While I am not sure exactly of where you bought the coin, if the store is associated with Mel Fischer in any way then they grossly overcharge. You can get the very same coins for a fraction of the cost elsewhere.
I'm working on three different country type set, that is Russia, Japan and Korea. I have just put together the Korean coin type set page - the rest will come along when I have the time. http://www.gxseries.com/numis/koreatype/koreatype.htm
Yes, the reverse is just as nice. I should just send it to NGC or PCGS and see what it comes back as. Im kind of curious.
Hello all, New Poster here...but a long time lurker...here is one of my favorite coins in my collection. I love the history these coins represent. To think back to what was happening in our country during these years. Hope you enjoy seeing this.
welcome tidball, and VERY nice coin! thanks for sharing!!! Is that coin the same weigh as a St. Gauden's Double Eagle?
