It was requested that I post my collection of Hadrian Travel denarius. So far I have only been getting the coins with the personification of the region. Right now I have Asia, Egypt, Africa, Germania, Hispania and Italia. As far as I know I'm only missing Alexandria and Nilus. Please let me know if there are others. I did not post attributions but will be happy to if somebody wants the information. Apparently the Germania is a somewhat scarce variety due to the bust. I am far from an expert as I have not studied the coins as much as some of you guys but am working on learning what I can. Please post your Hadrian travel coins for us all to enjoy. I know he is a favorite of many.
Alexandria: The color of the photo is accurate. I'm not sure what conditions produce purple. I have had it for 19 years and it has not changed.
This is a really fun set to collect and you have some really nice examples. I picked up Italia some months ago and didn't realise I only had Alexandria left until this post of yours. There are quite a few more provinces in bronze to go for if you finish the silver set . Some of the pictures below are the sellers'. When I finally get Alexandria I think I'll take the time to rephotograph them all. EGYPT ASIA GERMANIA ITALIA NILUS HISPANIA AFRICA
Nice set, Zumbly-- good thing you aren't OCD or you'd be crawling out of your skin until acquiring the Alexandria . Fun coins, everyone! I only have the two most common but will eventually get the rest. Africa Egypt Edited to add: Wait... exactly which coins are generally lumped in with his "Travel Series"? CNG considers the Restitvtori coins part of the series as well. Examples from their archives: https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=286663 Gaul https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=286664 Spain
Certainly the Restitvtori would be covered, but I can't say I care for them . On the other hand, I'd love some of the bronzes featuring provinces not included in silver - Mauretania! Bithynia! Dacia! Britannia! etc etc.
You folks are making me feel guilty only having one denarius and it being the Alexandria. I remember buying it at a coin club meeting sort of wishing it were one of the fancier designs. I always have had an aversion to coins with 'someone standing there' reverses. Now I have to find a few of the others. I do have a couple bronzes but am not sure how I feel about including the Restoration types as 'Travel'. Aegyptos sestertius Restitutori Africae as (I had to have this one because of the full legends on such a worn coin. I have much less a problem with wear than other 'faults'.)
Nice coins everyone. Doug, that Alexandria must be lonely but you have one of the scarcer ones to start. I guess the restoration coins could be considered as part of the series but to me the personification of the region coins stand on thier own. I have my eye on a pretty nice Nile denarius right now but also a really atractive Africa As. I should only buy one and it's a tough choice.
Thanks for posting these. Some very attractive coins. I would love to have any Hadrian Nilus type with the hippo and crocodile. Good luck finding one!
This series is somehow on my dream list (will need two or three mor lives) The only related coin I have is a worn (very much so) restitution sestertius. Like others I'm not sure about it belonging in the travel series Hadrian, Sestertius HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P , laureate and draped bust right RESTITVTORI HISPANIAE, Hadrian raising kneeling figure of Hipania 24.3 gr Ref : RCV # 3633, scarce Q
I just purchased this Hadrian denarius with Neptune. According to Foss Roman Historical Coins it commemorates Hadrians safe return from his trip to Greece and Sicily. Maybe this could be considered part of the travel series? It also seems from online research that Neptune facing right is scarcer then facing left.
Very nice Hadrian Neptune Denarius alde, here is the big bronze Sestertius that is part of that series, Rome, RIC 635, 22.5gm,
Ancient Aussie, that Neptune sesterstiece has a great portrait. I need to keep my eye open for one of those. It's an interesting type.
Thanks, yes the portrait is nice but unfortunately at some stage the coin had corrosion spoiling it a bit.
