I understand the criticism sir. I get your point. However, I have never seen state tax officials go to each table of a coin show and conduct mini-audits in the middle of a show, and then stand around the aisles during the show to try to "catch" any collector to collector activity they can also try to tax. I have been around coin shows in many states over the years, and nothing compares to the vile treatment dealers get here in MN. I honestly do not blame dealers from wishing to avoid this state. I guess its the price you pay for living in a socialist empire. The moment I can move out of this state I will. Unfortunately I have a job I love here.
No criticism intended. I figure if you choose, as I have, to work in state gummint, you need to keep a sense of humour about it. Besides, I'm actively working with both the ANA and the ICTA to keep Pennsylvania OFF the idiot's list, lest we screw up having the 2018 summer ANA show in Philly, and the 2019 winter/spring ANA show in Pittsburgh. Gov. Wolf needs to think very carefully about unintended consequences.
I go to one or two. Three if it's a really good year. I'm in south central PA, so the Whitman Show in Baltimore is my main squeeze. Gettysburg is pretty good, too, depending on how many vendors they get. Haven't tried any others around here.
On occasion and if they advertise correctly, I make the one here in town. That is the only one I could make. I still work and by no means, am I a rich guy with money to burn. I must be frugal with my purchases, going after only coins that will fill a book or spot in my slab dates. It's tough.
For long on quality, but variable on quantity, check out the Red Rose Coin Club shows twice a year in Lancaster. Usually an April and a September date.
I'll be heading out to Denver for the World 's Fair of Money 8/1 - 8/5/17. The ANA has set up a great deal with the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel: $184.00 single/double and $194.00 triple/Quad. Who else is going to that?
You should buy ancient coins, but I am biased that way. I bet you could get a few Roman Republican silver denarii that would knock your socks off. I made one of my bucket list shows this month, the NYINC. It was great. If I travel to Europe it will be for vacation, not a coin show. That said the list of dealers looks impressive: I have bought from several like Heritage, CGB, HD Rauch, Dr Peus, etc. Some of the big auction house names look to be missing: CNG, NAC, ... I would make sure you have paperwork to ship your coins to the US (if you are from the US). http://www.worldmoneyfair.de/wmf/en/list-of-exhibitors/ For folks interested in shows in Texas, Houston has several including one this weekend -
I've never been to a coin show. The closest was an occasional auction back in the 70s, that I enjoyed a lot. There is a coin show in April sponsored by a couple of local clubs that I might go to.
I attend 3-5 shows a year. They are small shows of up to 40 dealers. I like to arrive when the show opens to try and find what I need to fill some holes in my sets. They are fun to attend and helps the local coin clubs.
As a followup, I'm now doing the Baltimore Show regularly in the fall and spring. I'm not yet sure about the summer show. Hopefully three won't be any riots there this summer.
There are several shows in Michigan. The Michigan State organization has two shows a year in Warren, one in I believe April (April 7,8, and 9 this year) and one Thanksgiving weekend. Here's the list of local shows from the Michagan State website. It lists some larger far away shows and some shows from the surrounding states as well. http://www.michigancoinclub.org/Shows.html
