I remember that coin. I sold it to Vermeule back in the 80's. I bought it from David Michaels who in turn got it from Heritage or Superior. Cant remember. He was a neat guy. Once remarked that he enjoyed buying coins from my 'little catalogs'. Never knew if he was poking fun at me to not.
Ken, even If I do not know you, it is a pleasure to know this coin went through your hands. I bought this coin back in 1997-1999 from an on-line auction. This is the ticket that came with it. You may recognize it. It also refers to a Messenger Collection Sale, dated 1951 (?) I have searched for references to this collection with no success. A pleasant memory comes to mind when looking at the coin and ticket again: I spotted it on an on-line sale. I bid on it, but unfortunately needed to travel unexpectedly on the day of the sale. I totally forgot to follow on the action, until it was too late to up my bid. Naturally I was quite dissapointed I had missed it. When I got home the day after my wife surprised with the news that she had bid on it and won the coin for me! That is a loving wife for you! will never forget that.
I dont remember the tag, so this may not be the same coin I owned. Only took a few seconds to find some of the provenance: L. P. G. Messenger Collection (died 1951), sold by Glendinning the same year. Dont have a lot number or sale date, you will need access to the print version to find it. You have a great wife! When I attempt to talk coins my wife turns catatonic!
haha My wife is fine with it, but my in laws want me to sell my coin collection so that my wife can sit at home.
