Though I will very likely not buy a 2017 Liberty gold, mostly due to the typically inflated price of such coins (I'd rather buy an ounce of gold at spot with minimal markup), I don't think the coin looks that bad, especially in gold. I might purchase one in silver, again, depending on the premium. I also highly agree with the earlier comment that coins are politics. One could arguably call them propaganda, but that term fell into disuse after World War II and was replaced by the more innocuous "public relations." This can, like most things, serve for good or bad. Coins get distributed to millions upon millions and they represent, at best, attempts to sum up a nation's values and, at worst, attempts to sway people to a certain version of someone's idea of reality. This is what makes them so fascinating, especially on a global and historical scale. One can look at the coins of a nation over time and deduce how that nation wanted to represent itself to its own members and to the world. Coins and politics remain inseparable. That said, I've seen too many forums dissolve from an over injection of politics. Threads quickly become highly polarized, insensitive and intolerable. They rarely fit the definition of "debate" and usually deteriorate into invective. As such, the moderators are very wise to eliminate such elements from the forum as quickly as possible and to assiduously monitor posts for such content. Opening that gate would quickly ruin this forum. This persistence is one of the many things that keeps me coming back here.
This coin is going to be the biggest flop ever! Its always tough for me to come up with the money for whatever coin catches my eye. But I won't have to this year.
It's way too early to say it's going to be a flop or a success. Only time will tell for sure Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Time certainly will be the ultimate judge. It will be interesting to see what the big boys do with this one.
Both designs look too zoomed-in on one side or the other. The reverse design of the first pic with the eagle should show the tail, and the obverse of Lady Liberty should show her holding the entire flag and sword.
I like this design better than the one picked also. The way Liberty is holding the sword and flag is pretty awesome.
I don't know if anyone's seen this, but it doesn't look that bad. I'm sad to see lasers engraving the dies but I guess that's progress. https://www.youtube.com/embed/FnRboZn7Zvg
The lasers don't engrave the dies, they do the etching on the dies to produce the cameo frost on the proofs.
I MIGHT buy one because it's so ugly. It will have the title in my collection that says. "The Ford Edsel Of American Numismatics."
It's pretty simple, it's because there is nothing wrong with mentioning those words themselves. The problem comes along when one starts discussing politics and the various sides involved. You might want to read the rules, in particular the underlined sentence. Now I know that some might say that it is impossible to discuss coins sometimes without mentioning politics since it is the politicians that make the decisions regarding coinage – and that is quite true. And since we have phrases like “In God We Trust” on our coins you could say that the discussion of religion is necessary in a way – and that is quite true. Therefore, it will be up to the sole discretion of the Coin Talk Administrators and Moderators as to what constitutes a permissible discussion on these subjects – period.
