I just can't figure out what they were thinking or how it would benefit them. The only current theory is they've simply become that_incompetent.

For what it's worth, 11 out of 14 of my 'Bookers', graded by PCGS, all have a 'green bean' (not an proponent. Just happened that way). Apparently the second set of eyes agrees with their grading skills.........

AMEN! We are all free to use any TPGS or none of them. From what I can gather, NGC has replaced PCGS as the top grading service in spite of PCGS slabs generally bringing more money.

They're a publicly traded company with money as their number 1 goal, right? Stockholders unhappy? No problem. Undergrade for a few months to ensure resubmissions.
When the collector world catches on to this, will they steer the dealers in NGC's direction? Will the dealers adapt if the squeeze gets put on them? Or will everyone keep their heads in the sand?

That's not just a column writer though; he's the big dog and is, IMO, what makes this rather interesting.

Nope......and I ain't gonna. I like it just the way it is......OGH. Probably would upgrade though. Busted. But I'm sure NGC could be called for the same offence. I've got some Oregons in old 'fatty' holders that were gold beaned

It would not surprise me at all if there are as many dates which PCGS could almost as effectively cherry-pick to turn the tables on NGC.

Quite frankly, I like cardboard 2x2's as much as I like slabs.

I wonder if someday the U.S. coin market resorts back to raw as the preferred way...

But they can be skewed and/or used in ways to promote one's agenda. This all would mean much more to me had Mr. Salzburg, instead of simply giving examples from PCGS, also given comparable examples of how NGC is so much better, which is exactly what he's implying. I'm certainly not disputing what's presented, but his point would be more solid with meaningful comparative examples.

PCGS took away from their modern business in the last year or two judging by their increase on their earnings report. Salzburg certainly isn't acting like hes running the company who does more business if that still is the case.

Won't happen barring a complete collapse. Theres 100s of million of dollars worth of slabbed coins between the two companies if not billions. Collecting would never recover from that kind of value loss if it was oh sorry we don't care anymore just kidding on all these grades.

Also the simple fact that as collecting demographics move on to the next generations you are left with collectors that have known slabbing their entire collecting time. There is no nostalgia for those collectors about the preslabbing time.

The key to their survival is protection against the ever-improving onslaught of counterfeits. But if some story "breaks" that brings all their shenanigans to light? Say bye-bye.

Highly unlikely. With the advent of the Internet, the market has morphed into a significantly "sight unseen, bought from someone I don't know" mode. I hate the TPG concept but they're more important than ever.

Won't be a bye-bye just like wall-street didn't cease to exist. To much money is in coins to throw the baby out with the bath water. We may see a change, or coins suffer without a CAC or something like that but if the day comes where the TPGs are meaningless you will see a fire sale of everyone just trying to get back whatever money they can while they can.

We all love coins, but losing your shirt on something certainly makes it a lot less enjoyable to look at.

I also find it interesting how much he focuses on the "five year" timeline with his point about PCGS, but was sure to include the part about "standards evolving", which not so slyly suggests, in context, the rather obvious gradeflation that's afflicted both is a problem applicable only to PCGS. The guy came right out and said how "dedicated to consistency" they supposed are and have been "for 30 years", yet anyone who experienced it or can objectively look upon the facts should know otherwise.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but especially after all that's taken place this past year, I'm tired of hearing about how bad the other guy is while the one making the accusation presents little if any evidence of how good they actually are.

The coin inside still has value without a TPG name and number on it. There just won't be a premium for slabbed coins over the same coin in an air-tite.... but for this hypothetical situation to occur Internet selllers would need to universally take hi-def photos, counterfeiters quit trying and the average collector would need to be able to tell the difference between and MS-67 and MS-68... so never.
