Here is the other half of my recent pickups from NYINC. Manuel I, Empire of Trebizond Silver Asper 1238-1263 AD. / AR25, 2.8g o: OAGI-eVG eNI St. Eugenius, nimbate, standing facing, holding long cross in right hand, B to left r: MNL-OK H Eugenius standing facing, holding labaraum and akakia, hand of god above Sear 2601 My first Byzantine silver, this completes a set... sort of. I now have copper, silver and a gold coin from the Byzantine era.
This one stretched my budget a bit. Alexander III Tetradrachm Susa mint 325-320 B.C / AR25, 16.7g o:Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress r:BAΣIΛEΩΣ AΛEΞANΔΡOY, Zeus seated left, holding eagle on extended arm, legs crossed, monogram in left and beneath chair Not the best, looks like some crud or something on the reverse. But the price was good. Would have liked to buy more things but a lot of coins were a bit too rich for me.
Cool additions! Those Alexanders can really tax a budget! Macedonian Kingdom, Alexander III AR tetradrachm, 17.18g; Amphipolis mint, lifetime issue, struck under Antipater, c. 325-323 BC. Obv.: Head of Herakles right, clad in Nemean Lion scalp headdress tied at neck. Rev.: AΛEΞANΔΡOY Zeus enshrined left, throne without back and two leg struts, bright leg forward (archaic lifetime style), eagle in extended right hand, long scepter vertical behind in left hand, TE monogram lower left, concave field
There is a typing error. The sear number is 2601, not 2501. I have exactly the same type. Minted in Trabizond. 2,6 gram and 21 mm:
Thanks, changed it. Anyone have any Byzantine silver to share? Wouldn't mind seeing some different ones to add to my collection.
Did a write up on this one a while ago. Commemorating Constantinople 5th/6th c. AD Mint: Constantinople AR Scripulum Obvs: Helmeted, draped, and cuirassed bust of Constantinopolis right. Revs: Large K. 13x15mm, 1.07g
oh yeah, some nice AR for IR! the tet is awesome of course, but that trebizond coin is cool as can be, and in pretty good shape! i have 0 byzantine silver, has been on the list for over a year....so has "coin from trebzond". nice pick ups!
I've heard it's harder to find than the other metal types. Not sure exactly how rare they are, but from my personal experience I don't see them that often.
