Well today was the day for the KY Coin Show and boy did I have fun!
While the show lasted till 6pm I left around 3:30 and still had a full day.
This year there were about 6 coin dealers, and 2 knife guys. I did mostly trading with alittle selling! I sold over 2000 wheat cents to one guy and found out later when I got home that I over charged him so I had to track down his name and number and gave him a call and got his address so I can fix that.

I had taken 3 Washington Dollars with no edge lettering---by the end of the day I had 1 left and there was a guy really wanting it but wouldn't pay my price. I sold one to another dealer and within min's he had sold it again for about $30 more!!! :D :D

While I didn't pick up anything rare this time I did pick up some nice stuff! Over 50 Silver dimes for under $1 each....a Nickel Planchet (These are harder to find then most people think so I was more than happy to pay a higher price), an off center Jefferson Nickel (1999-D), and a 1875-CC Half Dollar in G, and last but not least an 1988 ASE! I also paid a guy for a coin I had picked up earlier this week....a GEM 1941-S Washington Quarter graded by NGC!

My views on the market now after this small show are these:
1: Mintsets and Proof Sets are not moving....unless you can get the harder to find dates (such as the 1999 Silver) or early years (1955, etc)...forget it.
2: Gold isn't going much either-- (Too $$$)
3: People around here don't keep up on paper money
4: Key dates are still pretty hot...but most people don't want to pay the price!
5: Anything silver will sell pretty much--I took some junk silver and priced it right at spot (or alittle under and it sold it fast), but then I took a Peace Dollar and priced it at $9 and didn't even have a look :hammer:
6: error coins are HOT....everyone was looking for such...and the Washington no edge dollars go pretty nice

All in all I would go to this show even if I didn't sell one dime---its worth it to see the coins from the different guys and talk and learn alittle from each one. Again this year I saw a complete set of dimes from 1916-1945! The guy was asking $1k total but the 21D had been cleaned, and the 1916-D was a NET gradee became of rim damage. Otherwise it was a nice VG coin!! Also this year I saw fakes......and people who think their coin is worth $1,000,000.00 +!

I was able to get alittle work done on the varietynickels.com website and have some photos up to where they can be viewed now on the date guide. Right now I think only 3-5 maybe are open for viewing but there are many, many more to come!!!

Wish I could have met some of y'all from CT! A dealer friend and I were talking how we need to get a coin show started alittle closer to Lexington KY. That being a big town and such and not too far away to drive might be a good choice for a show sometime.

Have a great night! I'll try to post some photos soon!!!

Nice report Speedy. I appreciate the market analysis. I am curious to see if the market picks up at ANA Milwaukee, which often signifies the better fall season for the coin market.

Speedy that was a very interesting report  Can I ask were the fakes on sale as fakes or someone trying to pass them off as genuine?

The fakes were from 2 guys---
One guy knew what they were and told everyone what they were and gave them out to the kids for free. The other guy is an older guy and can't see that good and just buys anything, and I think sometimes he buys fakes. His problem is that he buys coins that should be rare, without any research! I've talked to some of the guys around here and they agree that he has alot of fake coins but none of them know how they can really tell him, without making him really mad. You see, he does't ask what we think about the coin. He just comes over and puts a coin down and says....that is a rare coin from 250bc, and there are only 5 known.........or....I picked this up years ago, and the guy had found it in change.

I think it will! The ANA shows seem to always sound great from the reports!! Have fun and make sure you let us know how it goes!!!

Very interesting teport speedy, I have seen what you describe about near spot silver, but I've been finding that getting key dates is getting more and more difficult.

I think many of them have been undervalued for years.

It sounds like you had a great time at that show. Our next show in this area is September 1st and 2nd in Hagerstown, MD. I think so far theres 52 tables to be set up, should be a fairly nice show as it always is. Some of you guys that live in the area should plan to attend this one.

Sounds like it was good show. I spent the last two days outside Lexington(Masterson Station) for soccer games. If it had been around Lexington I could have went between games.

I assume that the first picture is a Type 1 nickel planchet?
    Nice buys.

Yes it is! I had searched for sometime for a nice nickel planchet but kept getting out bidded or something. From what I hear the TY1 might be alittle harder to get than the TY2! This one came along and I got it, along with the off center, and some cash in a trade for a Edgeless Washington Dollar!!!

I like the half dollar. I'm surprised you didn't sell the peace dollar for $9.

    Speedy:
Yes, the type 1's are supposed to be more difficult to get (all denominations).
Mostly, because they have skipped two steps in the minting process.

    Nice pick.

    I have now ;)

    Frank,
I had been seeing Ty2 planchet go for $15+ and so I didn't feel bad about this one at $25-$30. That pretty much completes a set for me...I have:
    Cent Planchet--Copper, Normal, Steel
    Dime
    Nickel
    Quarter

The next one I'm going to get is a silver Half Dollar planchet!!!! The other day I tried to put in a bid for a large cent planchet. But it went to high before I could bid :(

A couple of months ago I was able to buy a 1/2 clad type #2 planchet, for $5.00!

Just found out that I got a steal!
