Nice detail on that coin @Julius Germanicus. I still miss the patina however. You should take a before and after image so we can compare.

I did not remove the patina on any of my coins. I bought them all the way they look - because I love that original yellow Orichalcum tone on my Sestertii :-D

    I BID ON THAT COIN!

    ;)

Well, I'm glad it went to a good home. I've been wanting a Commodus coins, especially a sestertius, for quite a while now! I was curious if I was going to see it posted here.

I picked myself up a consolation prize sestertius that's inbound now.

    nice BIG win for you!

Thanks! I would have felt alarmed if there were an identical twin around ;-p

That is a nice sestertius, JG.

I kinda like the tone on that one, actually.

Here is a sestertius of Commodus from my collection showing Commodus in one of his favorite roles, i.e., as Hercules himself.

Commodus. AD 177-192. Æ Sestertius. Rome. Struck AD 184.
    Obv: Laureate head right
Rev: Hercules standing right, leaning on club set on ground and holding bow, with lion’s skin draped over arm. RIC III 399

I am beginning to like your style @Julius Germanicus ! You have been a great champion for bronzes! I have really liked your AE's (virtually all Sestertii?)

I really do not collect Roman Imperials, rather, I like Roman Republic issues. Soooo... the only Commodus that I have are a couple AR Denarii (very pedestrian at that...)

Thank you :-D. I like your Denarii, too!
I used to buy certain rulers as middle bronzes, but now that I managed to fetch Diadumenianus I am in the process of "upgrading" everything to Sestertii where possible and affordable. I like a uniform appearance for my portrait gallery so the only manageable way is to stick with as little patina as possible.
    Cheers, J.G.

I have a humble provincial to share:

    Commodus; Philppopolis, Thrace; AD 180-192
    AE, 4.07g, 18mm; 6h
Obv.: AY K? M?...-KOMOΔOC; laureate head right
Rev.: [Φ]ΙΛΙΠΠΟ[ΠOΛEITΩN]; coiled serpent with something in it's mouth
Ref.: Varbanov 994 - Wildwinds offers no description of the legend. Looking at other coins the obverse description may read AY K AI AYP KOMOΔOC. The K on the obv is hard to read and the AI looks a lot like an M. My understanding is Varbanov is not clear on this coin either.
