I'd been keeping an eye out for an 1842 small date large letters Seated Liberty half dollar for some time. Not wanting to spend a bloody fortune I was holding out for an example in good to very good condition. For a coin that is supposedly not-so-rare, they sure don't come up for auction on eBay that often. But recently an 1842 was listed, but the verbiage didn't clarify medium or small date. And the picture didn't have good enough detail of the four to show the crosslet that is found on the medium date. I guess I wasn't the only one who suspected it might be a small date because there were three bidders in the last ten seconds. I won the auction and received the coin a couple of days ago. Happily for me is was a small date. This is the seller's photo:

A coin that has not only performed its service, but has now retired and is being cared for. Nice find!
