Okay .. all these stories about finding great coins in rolls from banks has me inspired for a few treasure hunts myself but my husband said if I go to the bank and ask for a 'box' of half dollars they'll give me 'new' halves, I should ask for 'bags' ... and I thought they (new halfs) weren't in circulation so what gives... should I say 'box' or 'bag' ? what's the secret password? :secret:
Boxes are fine, the new coins are randomly added in. i have gotten boxes of cents, and thought that they'd be all new coins, but they were sorted in and mostly various dates, including wheaties.
Most of the time, you get repacked boxes with mixed dates. Once in a while, you will get new coins, but I doubt that will happen with halves. Good luck.
the bags are only when they have a coin counter machine. if they have one of those, ask to buy the halves out of the counter machine, and that would be a bag. normally banks only have a few hand rolled rolls of halves, so i don't think they would have a box of halves unless you ask them to order a box. just go into a bank and ask for half dollars. if they have a box or bag, they will sell it to you. most banks don't have those of hand though.
Danr, how heavy is a bag of halves, Mary at the bank told me she would order a $1000.00 bag for me. So do I need my truck or a fork lift? Thanks John
Neither one - a $1000 bag of halves is under 100 lbs. And don't mix up bags from the US Mint which require a fork lift to move them and the bags of coins that the Fed will sell to banks if they request them.
Well i have never gotten a bag of halves so i don't know how heavy they are, but the lady at the bank seemed to be fine picking a bag of them up from the coin counter.
the most I have gotten is 4 boxes at a time (2000$ worth) The most I tried to cary at once is two boxes $1000 worth, Even know I think each box is about 25 pounds, lets see...about 11.340g each coin, there is only one coin counting machine around where I live and I give them the half from the other banks!! so it doesn't make sense for me to buy their bags! anyway probably could cary 3 boxes, but becuae they are small, hard to hold on to.
I would be referring to the ones from the US mint. Bank usually have boxes of rolls ($1000.00 of halves= 2 boxes)
