I bought this for myself as my wife doesn’t buy coins. She tells me to get them myself so I do. I found 3 nice Standing Liberty Quarters. This is the one I bought for myself birthday present. I gave it to myself a short time ago today. Nothing like buying yourself a nice coin on your birthday. It really does make you feel good.
It’s a 1917-D Variety 1, which means Miss Liberty is showing her bare breast. The public rejected this and the outcry was so large that her breast was covered later that same year.
Her left arm is raised, holding a shield for protection. Her right hand is holding an olive branch to represent peace and the designers initial, a M for MacNeil, is above, and to the right of the date.
On the reverse variety, one has no stars under the eagle. On variety tothree stars were added the eagle was also raised to allow room for the stars. Another design change occurred in 1925 to allow for the date to be put on a pedestal. This helped to prevent the date from wearing off as fast as it did. The day was reassessed on the pedestal.
1917 D variety one had a total balance of 1,509,200 coins. I believe this to be in extremely fine condition.

I also give myself a coin for my birthday. And my wedding anniversary, my cat's and dog's birthdays, and any thing else I can come up with. James

It is funny that nobody objected to all the bare breasts on our currency and bonds!
