I was grabbing a coffee today at dunkin donuts. I got my coffee, got my change, glanced it over very quickly for anything and proceeded to toss it into the tip jar.

Upon doing so, i glanced inside and what did i see??

    An Indian head cent!!!

    So what would you do??

What did I do?? Nothing unfortunately. :( It was busy and i was already on my way out. I didn't want to make a scene and didn't quite know how to ask to "buy" the cent from the tip jar. I always said that if i ever saw anything good in there i would offer a trade of a $1 bill or something for it.

Unfortunately, i just let it be and walked away.

    What would you do?

I didn't see the date, it was partially concealed under a nickel.

Decent condition coin. Nothing spectacular, but perfectly readable

I would only hit the tip jar if I asked the employee first, nothing like looking like george costanza in the calzone episode of seinfeld where he gets caught with his hand in the tip jar.

i'd just switch a regular cent for it, and if someone ask what your doing, just say you are a coin collector, and saw a cent you needed for your collection. then put a nickel in its place. i do this all the time with the take a "penny" leave a "penny" cup at the gas stations, except thats different.:D

    "penny"=cent*:p

If it's in a jar like with a lid and a little slot to put the money in then that's a little different. But if it was in a little dish that said need a penny take a penny type thing I'd switch out for it in a heartbeat. :)

It was in a mug. That's what they all use around here. A typical mug with a handle.

swap a buck for the penny. The tippie probably did not know what it was. Both of you would have been happy. People in line can wait, I do .

If it was something like a common IHC, I would just leave it in there to give someone else the thrill of finding it. Now, if it were some nice Bust coinage, I may be pulling a George Costanza!....lol.

lol, it may be a commin IHC, but i currently only have 2 in my collection and would have loved to have a 3rd.

I never get sick of "common" collectable coins. Wheat cents might be easy to find and i have rolls of them, but i always get excited when i look in my hand and see one...even if it's a 1958 wheatie.

Oh, I understand your point. Heck, I still search half dollar rolls for silver. I love finding the occasional wheat cent in change as well.

I would ask if I could exchange the cent for a dollar bill. If I didn't ask I would have been thinking of that indianhead for the rest of the day.

I'd tell them that you wanted to put 86 cents in the tip jar and was getting change out from your dollar bill.

I would've took it out and put a half-dollar in there instead, then how can they complain?
Or would you have had to really fish around in there to get it? ....

I agree with bama guy I'd probably offer more for the cent and then eat my donut.

If it was just in a mug I'd definitely swap it. If it was in a jar with a lid I'd ask if I could swap it. I'm not afraid of making a wave or two if I get a coin out of it. :D
