I am still trying to figure this out...

I had posted a thread on here a long time ago (maybe 12 years) about my profile V-Nickel picture and what the issue is. No one could really say and since that time the post (I believe) was purged. Since then I have had 5 people tell me different things. One of them said it was acid damage, another said that they thought it was done on purpose (which to me seems like a lot of work for a coin that doesn't have much value normally) and three told me it was major lamination of the coin, including a dealer I went to a year ago. He even offered to buy it from me but I declined because if this is truly lamination then its the most I have ever seen on a coin and would rather send it in to get it slabbed. He probably wouldn't have offered me much anyways. What do you guys think this is? It looks to me like major lamination as well or possibly something being on the planchet itself when the coin was produced considering it really hasn't effected the high parts but I really don't know. I have seen other laminated coins that look like this but with much less lamination. Would I be able to maybe contact the mint and ask if they would know? I'm sure they have the most experience as to picking out the error coins considering they make them or would it be worth just sending it in to get it slabbed and see what they say? Let me know what you think. BTW sorry for the picture quality. I tried. I would have scanned it but my scanner needs repaired. Thanks.

No. Don't waste your time and money. It is all just circulation damage.

    Yes, correct again.
It would be a decent find if it was a Metal detected find, no? :D

What a metal detectorist would call a lost leader :p
Nice age range but not a precious metal or a key date...Leading the detectorist to keep hunting :p
    I'm not wrong :D

    Definitely environmental damage.
Maybe it was wrapped in a cloth or pocket and burnt.
Has that chared look like some areas were starved of oxygen in a fire.

I have an 1818 Large cent that I found that apparently was under a newer campfire right near an old cellar hole. It was black and charred as well. I'll try to find it. Now, where did I put that coin??

Jersey magic man. As an error coin it could be a planchet error, severe Struck Thru Grease?

I don't think it is any type of error. Just undetermined damage. I am thinking some form of heat. Who knows? Probably never will.

It’s not a mint error of any type and certainly no lamination issue. Know one at the mint today would have a clue as to what it is. It was minted 127 years ago and things have changed.
It circulation wear with a few gouges. It may have been exposed to some type of an acid or just had a soft drink spill on it.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Jersey magic man seems to have the same type of coin that this is. I did use a cell phone for this but when you zoom in on an object the quality drops down which causes the low quality. I'll add more pics to this once I get my scanner up and running. Waiting on a new printhead to be delivered.

Actually, most of the stuff I get are metal detector finds. I collect wheat and Indian head cents and this is a good way to get the lower dates. I can't remember but its possible that this came from one of those.
