SAN JOSE, Calif. - John Feigenbaum didn't sleep at all during his redeye flight across country. He's not a nervous flier — he had a dime worth $1.9 million in his jeans pocket.

Feigenbaum, 38, of Virginia Beach, Va., is a rare coin dealer, and the dime he was carrying from San Jose to New York is a 1894-S dime, one of only nine known to exist.

He picked up the dime, one of only 24 known to be coined in 1894 in San Francisco, on Monday from the seller's vault in Oakland. He delivered it to the buyer's vault the following day, in midtown Manhattan.

Feigenbaum said he and the seller's agent will split a 6 percent commission on the deal.

Feigenbaum said he put the dime, which is encased in a 3-inch-square block of plastic, in his pocket. Accompanied by a security guard, he drove to the airport.

Shortly after boarding the plane, Feigenbaum transferred the dime from his pants pocket to his briefcase.

"I was worried that the dime might fall out of my pocket while I was sitting down," he said.

All across the country, Feigenbaum kept checking to make sure the dime was safe by reaching into his briefcase to feel for it.

"It's the Holy Grail of coins," he said.

I posted this topic about a half hour before you did in this same forum. But rlm's cents says this is the third thread started. Where is the first one located? I can only seem to find our two.

The first posting was actually a reply within a thread of a different topic. That is why I missed it. The 10:59am thread is my thread. I did search around a bit, as I always do, before posting a thread whose content consists of solely a news story...

...Anyway, I want one of those dimes!

I saw a story about an 1894-S dime several years ago, and it resparked my interest in collecting.

I'm not sure why Big Media publishes rare coin stories - but I think it's good for the hobby.

What's the big deal, it wouldn't match my 1933 Double eagle and 1904 Dollar and the 1913 V-nickel, so I told them that I'd pass.

You have a 1904 Dollar? Man, I wish I had one of those. My seven are all 1804!

    Had to do that!

aw, youse guys are just jealous over a little typo.

Okay so it is an 1904.
Far rarer than an 1804-- it is also a Bust dollar!
Got it on eBay so I know that it is real!
    Even slabbed by SGS!

Big deal, I got it and you don't.

(Hey, wanna buy a bridge in Brooklyn?)

If it's SGS it has to be good for something! (yet to be determined).

    Treashunt,

How much for that Brooklyn bridge action? Is it slabbed by SGS too?

Hey! I thought you had to use another forum to sell stuff. :) Actually - I bet you would get some bids if you posted it on ebay. Of course you might get a negative when you can not ship it. :)

Well, I for one am glad that Whitman elected to put a "rare" cardboard filler in the space for the 94-S in their folders :D

Thanks for sharing the story and the images.

I'll pass on the bridge; after the Golden Gate and Sydney Harbour which I've already bought, there's just no space left here...
