With my first child due on Dec. 28, I wanted to get some kind of numismatic memento, but I didn't know what was out there and also didn't know what year he would be born. It turns out he came on his due date, so that left me to see what was available for 2016. Some countries have a special coin for each year, and I was able to find them for Australia, Canada and Great Britain at least. The U.S. doesn't make any special coins but it does have a special proof gift set. Of course these were all sold out since by the time I was looking for one, the year was over, but for twice the issue price I was able to find one on eBay. I wanted to share this set and the Canadian set that I bought. It's a neat thing to have to commemorate a child's birth. Hopefully he'll care about it some day. Here are some scans of the U.S. set. Another neat thing about this is the quarter included is the Illinois park, and I live in Illinois.
CONGRATULATIONS! When my son was born I bought the 2010 U.S. Silver proof set. Then I thought maybe I should get a set of coins from 1910. And that's when I started to become a coin collector.
Thanks! Yeah, I also ordered the silver proof set, but that hasn't arrived yet. I did want something specific for the baby though. It's too bad the U.S. doesn't make a special coin like the other countries do.
Back in the seventy's when my children were born. I would get a proof set and buy a Capitol Plastics Holder. They came in pink or blue with a place to their picture.
Considering it was his birthday, they sell coin sets, the cover says happy birthday, unsure what coins they contain, I didnt look, my last son was born 12 yrs ago, now he's a coin hound, he saves everthing, he even started checking coin star, if someone is grabbing the change he'll go over and star at the guy like he was going to check and just look up at the guy, most of the time the dude just hands him over the coins, amazing how much silver dimes and foreign coins he gets. Good luck to you.
Congratulations. I recently did the same thing. My first son was born in 2014 and my second in 2016 (on April fools day). I got both of them silver proof sets and a proof ASE those years. I wanted to do an AGE but the budget wasn't there.
While they are still available for small premiums or even at face if you get lucky, set aside a BU roll of each 2016 circulating coin from each mint. I put together a 1955 set for me, and a set for my son in 1995.
I bought my 34 year old daughter a 1982 proof set (her birth year) as a stocking stuffer. It was a hit! Guess it's never too late.
I approached it a little differently. I picked up an 1814 Large Cent, Dime and Half Dollar for my grandson born in 2014. I bought a 1816 Large Cent for one granddaughter born in 2016 and am on the hunt for another Large Cent for my other granddaughter born in 2016. Year sets are cool, but you only need one coin from 1816. Truth: told my kids to get busy to get grandkids born in 2016...2 of 3 were on time and target.
