A new one to complete a set of 1936 dated Walking Liberty Half Dollars. This one is an MS65 of San Francisco origin. The Denver one for 1936 is also an MS65, and the mother mint one is an MS66.

 

If I remember right the SanFrans thru these years had weak obv strikes. The luster is real nice!

 

For a number of years I have been working on assembling a denomination suite of US patterns. I never thought that I would be able to find the Half Cent since there are only two varieties, J-155 and J-177. Both of them are experimental patterns trying out different alloys of copper. There is only one example known of J-155 and an estimated 75-100 known of J-177. The J-177 was minted with two different alloys. One mixture was 88% copper 12% nickel and the other is 90% copper 10% nickel. They are also known in mint state or proof formats. I do not know why that is and perhaps someone on CT knows or could point me in the right direction for researching that question. I know the photo quality isn't the best but it's what NGC had to offer. Needless to say this will be on lay-a-way for a while, but I am really psyched to be its new custodian. All that is left to complete the suite is the twenty cent pattern.

I feel like Walking Libs in general are so underrated, this one is GORGEOUS! Nice find!

Thank you Charley for your kind words. I do have access to an XRF machine but I do not know if I can get a reading through the slab. I'll test it when I have the coin in hand.
