Maximinus thrax denarius weight question

    I bought a couple of these I liked from a dealer and decided to pull them out of the 2x2s and weigh them. One was 3.14 g similar to others around this time but this one weighs in at 2.73 g. Is it odd for this to be this low? It looks nearly the same size in diameter as the other one (not pictured).

    That coin is perfectly fine. The weight of his coins tend to be all over the place. Most seem to be under 3.2grams. 2.73 g is acceptable.

    For these coins, the Roman mint had to strike X amount per pound (al marco); so the individual weight (al pezzo...like gold coins), though remarkarbly consistent, could vary significantly.

    Like mentioned above weights can vary quite a lot. This one is "light"

    And even as low as 2.43 gr.
