Opinions on this message from someone that had been selling modern fakes

This is the kind of thing I do, probably at the risk of my long standing eBay account. What do you guys think? I'm asking because I originally gave the benefit of the doubt as far as intent, but now am not so sure.

The second block-out box is the phone number, which was typed in 4 lines for some reason. I will only say that it is a Los Angeles number and the seller has well over 1k feedback and 100% positive. No other identifiers for obvious legal reasons.

I don't get it... so are you not doing research? Are you wording it that way to trap them in a lie or something? It'd be cool to see pics of the counterfeit? Thx

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

The phone number is written like that to get around eBay's policies of not giving out phone numbers. It is to defeat their algorithm used to find and delete phone numbers.

I was legit doing research to try and find out where some of these things are coming from. The reply was unexpected, but unfortunately familiar

Sorry for not posting any pics of the coins I was referring to. Concern over "identifiers" and all, but I guess it doesn't really matter :)

I realize the pictures are not very close up, but that is the max size of them in the listings.

This speaks to the seller's frame of mind, and gives pause to rethink their intent.

That's why I rethought the matter of intent. The message I sent is a pretty generic one I've been sending for a few years to sellers I see selling this stuff. This type of response and its presentation has become a red flag of its own. On the bright side, I sometimes do get an actual answer :)

Well, the fact that he immediately responded, giving you his phone number to directly communicate about it, made my thinking journey along precisely the opposite direction of yours (if I'm reading you correctly). If you're deliberately selling fakes, you don't give your phone number out to inquiries.

Of course, that's predicated on the number being genuine. :)

You may be right. I've had similar responses before, but I never made the call. This is also why I didn't put the seller on blast. The coins pictured are quite certainly modern fakes. But the seller's intent is not certain. Mostly interested in how other people would interpret this situation, and I appreciate your feedback from the other end of the opinion spectrum. We'd all be extremists if not for that :)

The message reads like English is a second language and they would be happy to pump out whatever you're interested in.

Call the Seller and talk with them. Then report your findings.

That is one reason I never made the call, I get enough telemarketers as it is.

The other reason for not making the call is because I don't want them to have my number :)
Yea, I know about blocking numbers, but seems even more cowardly than me not wanting to call them

I betcha you'll have better luck over the phone, but they won't discuss it over ebay's messaging system. If they admit they have done something against ebays TOS on the ebay messaging system it can easily be used against them.

Agreed or that the seller would be happy to sell you whatever it is you want but outside of Ebay. Which is the reason they want you to call as they likely think you want to purchase and well even sellers of counterfeits want to avoid getting ripped off by Ebay.

I read it as a positive response and in your position would make the call to get more information. Please post your findings here if you decide to call.

The way I see it? Another way to peddle their wares. I've seen newer accounts with similar products so the seller thought it might be that you might want to be a new seller trying to sell their wares.

Definitely counterfeit as far as I am concerned. Similar luster and photograph technique.

Download a "burner" app and flush it once finished.

All you're going to get here is speculation, and if you want the real story, you're probably going to have to call.

Or use one of those prehistoric payphones we learned about in history class :D

Both good ideas. Still have a few payphones around here in NYC. I guess the heart of the matter is that it's settled in my mind - product and intent. I mostly want to get viewpoints on how others view this, not so much invite the Chinese mafia to my doorstep.
