Hello all, it's been a while since I've posted anything on CoinTalk. Hopefully I can remember how to post photos. I found this 1906 PCGS Slabbed IHC in a group of coins I found in my stepfather's stuff when he passed away 10 years ago. (doing some light coin house cleaning). Anywho, I would love some opinions on a ball park grade. Also, would you consider this Red, Red Brown? Thanks again for your opinions!
When you look up the cert, it was details for questionable color. Personally I don't see it, but there must have been something at the time to warrant the designation. Possibly this has retoned as I think this holder, from looking at the pcgs site, was retired in 2011. I'm no expert, but I think it would grade High AU or Low MS and pretty sure Brown. But the details grade for the piece takes precedence over a color designation. It might find its way into a straight holder if submitted today, but it's really not worth the money to have this done.
I agree with @Joshua Lemons . I would have guessed a straight graded 62 or 63. I think the coin is right at about 50/50 red so could go RB or BN. If regraded it might be better to go ICG or ANAC because even a successful regrade will make little difference mony wise. Perhaps if just selling use Great Collections as is or as an ANAC regrade. just my opinions. good luck no matter what you choose. James
I was thinking MS-63, Brown. It may have been brighter when it went into the slab. The key is whether or not it has hairlines from cleaning. If it does, it still won’t grade. Given the costs of grading and shipping, it’s probably not worth the expense.
John, I don't see any hairlines or anything else that would cause it to get a details grade. As I said I'm not an expert, I deal with Morgans and Peace Dollars. I think I may crack it out and send to ANACS and see what happens. They have deal for $14 a coin if you send 10. I use the crap out of that for my Morgans and Peace$. I figure I got it for free so the $14 is worth the risk.
I doubt it’s worth the price to regrade unless you catch a $10.00 special. I would say it red/brown , possibly just brown and it should grade in the low sixties, MS-62 range. I don’t see any signs of cleaning but I am looking at a photo of a coin in a slab.
It's probably worth a try. It's from an era when the top three graders don’t like this look. If it were from the 1866 to 1878 era, it might be different.
That is a very nice IHC I would have that beauty graded. Yes, it could be a bit expensive but in my humble opinion it would be worth it. Good luck.
I would be the one that is going to buy the coin because the slab, because it represents a time in grading history. The coin deserves the slab even if it might go MS62.
