So I just purchased a pretty amazing estate coin collection that included a few “lifetime” coins in details slabs. I’m curious how folks feel about these coins. Do you hate them! Do you love them for all their imperfections? Do they make you wonder who the heck scratched that ASE???

The ASE and Fugio were very tough to value. The 1955/55 was a bit easier.

    Enjoy…if you dare!!!

The corrosion on the DD looks to be relatively mild. The coin itself is one of the strongest examples of doubling I have ever seen. Do you think the corrosion is treatable?

My guess is that it looks relatively mild because it's already been treated. Nothing can be done with the pitting though.
    Great coin none the less!!

Not a one there that I'd turn away from my collection, but also not a chance that I'd be willing to pay what they're worth, regardless of "details" grades. I'm thinking there's more than enough demand for each of these that they'd bring strong bids, even with damage.

Those are the kind of coins I would buy. My 55 double is beautiful but the slab says a spot was removed. I don't care. It made them affordable on my working mans budget.

My favorite for type albums. Here’s a couple of halves I picked up cheap years ago before I had 2 nickles to rub together, the 1795 has the date filed off

I avoid "details coins" when I can. I have bought some pieces that probably would not grade raw.

Here is a 1792 half disme with a hole. There are more than a few of these around. This one still sold for $37,500 in a Heritage auction.

I knew a dealer in Boston who had one with hole, which he carried around in a cointain in his pocket. I wanted to buy it, but he wouldn't sell. Back then they were under $2,000. One day he said he lost it in the woods. Maybe some day someone will make a metal detector find.

I was not able to find the photos, but there is one out there in AU with a hole.

That ASE is absolutely amazing. I'd be proud to own that. Didn't even notice the small scratch until the very enlarged photo. And the penny with the doubled date? If you are ashamed of it, I'm sure we can come to an agreement with you parting with it. :p

While ASEs are not one of my things that one is a beauty even with the scratch. The feugio and the 55/55 I would happily add to my collection, but then I do keep saying No more details coins! It hasn't stopped me yet, but I keep saying it :D (last was the G$1 with a small staple scratch I think lol)

This one also has a hole, but is VG. https://coins.ha.com/itm/early-half.../1373-3021.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515

I think one of these two was found in an LCS junk bin a few years ago. I recall a thread about it somewhere, maybe on CCF.

Edit: no, jumbled memory, the junk bin find was this one https://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/992407, FR02, no hole, sold apparently to a famous lowball collector for $92k + BP.

I’m glad to see all the positive feedback on these details coins. They really are spectacular. The scratch on the Eagle isn’t distracting and the corrosion on the 55/55 is on the reverse so it isn’t a bother at all.
I’m always in a bit of a pickle when I buy these types of collections and fall a little bit in love with so many of the coins…the business model says I can’t keep them all. This collection was a real one of a kind. There were plenty of high end non-details coins included as well. Now I just need to figure out what I can afford to hold on to.
Here’s a couple more photos of what was in the collection…

While I'm generally not a big fan of details coins I have bought a few. Sometimes its the only affordable option for me. This was a bucket list coin that I could never justify spending the big bucks on, and I have no regrets with it as is.
