I got another keeper. Unfortunately I think it was cleaned at some point. It's the
1944-D 1C DDO FS-101 on PCGS. How much value does past cleaning take away PICT0061.jpg PICT0002.jpg from a coin?

Okay, where's the doubling? On the "9"? I would say at least half of the value.

Wear has significantly diminished the doubling, so that is a bigger issue than prior cleaning. Both issues taken together seriously weaken the desirability of the coin. It will be very difficult to place a value on it.

Maybe another member has an idea how to do that and come up with a value that’s realistic.

Sal, it’s not that simple. The auction record is $1500 for a MS66RD. So first you have to set a grade on this one, which could be VG8-F12 as best as I can make out, and then try to extrapolate a value. Not knowing what the value is for the low end is what makes it difficult to come up with a ballpark value.

The coin shows the doubling on the tail of the 9 and doubling is supported by the R and U of TRUST = DDO FS-101.

Given the condition of the coin the value will be low.

I crunched some numbers and came up with a fair value…I think.

Using the PCGS listed values for the 1944-D 1C DDO FS-101, I calculated the decreasing percentage per full one point grade. From MS66 to MS65 the value drops by half, then by 52% to MS64. The change is 72% drop to MS63 where the listings stop.

Continuing the 72% drop rate (there’s nothing else to use) down to F12 we arrive at $7.48. At this point we have accounted for grade. If we do as @SensibleSal66 suggested and reduce this value by half we get $3.74 and account for previously cleaned. This is all very rough estimation but I personally would not buy this coin even at this price as it is in very rough condition.

Sal…you were on a good roll thinking about “half the value” but I think you see now that that was only for cleaning without accounting for color type or condition.

I’m wide open for anyone else with a better way to figure it out and maybe come up with a better analysis…Spark1951
