I noticed that there are some collectors of Brazilian coins present here. I'am collecting them also and are especially interested in contemporaneous fakes (falsas da epoca). According to some catalogs a contemporaneous fake 20 reis 1822 R (Rio) should exist. I mean the new type of Pedro I, struck for the first time in 1823. In the past i bought 2 of those on the internet that looked like 1822 and were sold as such but they both turned out to be 1829. Searching with google i can only find one other picture but that coin is also not very clear and no proof for me that this date really exits. Are there collectors here that own this coin or know of any good pictures? I would be very gratefull.

Alurid, thank you. This is the coin type that i mean but these are from 1829. On the site they don't have a picture of a 1822 coin. When you search for 1822 they show the old type and one new type of 1824. They remarked that 1822 and 1831 are counterfeit but do not show them.

Numismat, that is the one that i found on the internet and it is the only one. This coins seems to be cleaned, it was probably corroded or something. I have great doubts about this coin, to me it is not a definite example of a 1822 counterfeit due to the corrosion and cleaning. I know of too many copper coins from coinfinds that seem to be something special but are not. I have the 1831 counterfeit and that one is without doubt. I guess i have to keep searching.

    Greetz,

Have you tried registering for this site? I collect Portuguese and Brazilian coins. I tried to register for this site by answering the historical question required to demonstrate that one is not attempting to hack it. I answered both in English and Portuguese (not my first language). Any suggestions? Thank you

    Sullykerry2,

I tried to register but the question they ask to see if you are no bot is indeed odd. I had to fill in the name of a king who disappeared in some battle and had to look it up on the internet. It turned out that i was already registered. I probably registered when i was in Brazil 4 years ago. I then wanted to know more about the new catalog of Brazilian coins from Bentes. I guessed my username but cannot remember my password. The site should sent me an email now to reset my password but until now i received nothing yet.....

    Greetings,

While no expert on Brazilian coins, the Moedas Brasileiras catalog, 2015, lists the 1822 20 reis as a "falsas da epocha". I think this means a contemporary counterfeit.

Now the Colonial type with "XX" instead of "20" was issued in 1822. Also 1831 does not seem to be an issue date for 20 reis.

Indeed, falsa da epoca means: contemporaneous counterfeits. 1822 and 1831 are no official coins but made by (foreign) forgers. The counterfeit 1831 exits without a doubt but about the 1822 i have doubts.
