Got this one today...looks like a monogram of Leo. But I don't understand the legend at all. "AnAn"? Maybe Greek letters? I suppose it could be an imitation or some Vandal coin. Anyone know of such a legend on a 5th C coin? Thanks for any opinions.
Draw it freehand with a fine-tip marker...helps me concentrate on the main features, and I can scribble research notes around it. Plus I find it fun !
Sorry I can't help with the coin. I have few myself that are still in the unattributed pile and have been for a few years. Just wanted to say, great coin drawing!!!
Can't tell by the pic but the excellent line drawing looks very similar to this piece. In RIC this is identified as Leo or Leontius and is similar to the common Leo monogram except for the left bar at the top of the "E". This was discussed earlier in this forum and the bottom line is that not a single issue with this monogram reverse has a legible obverse inscription. Is it Leo? Probably not. Is it Leontius or more likely an imitative type? Probably. Yours is about the best obverse I've seen of this type. A very, very nice coin.
