Did they sell a GSA Ike Dollar similar to the GSA Morgan's? This one is in a blue box, not the typical brown Ike.
I'd call that a Frankingstein Ike. That is a Brown Box Ike plastic holder with an S mint mark proof strike silver coin in Blue GSA Morgan Dollar packaging. The mint never packaged Ike's like that. This is what a brown box Ike should look like in the Original Government Packaging (OGP). The mint also sold Blue Ike's. Blue Ike's consisted of a business strike silver Ike Dollar with an S mint mark in a cellophane wrapper with a Mint token packaged in a blue envelope (hence the name). I would not buy the Frankenstein Ike, and if the seller did not disclose the product as I did I would not patronize that entity either. JMY2C. Happy Collecting!
The brown box Ike came in a plastic holder which was the same size as the GSA holder. This thing is an assembled fabrication.
Pass as it’s not original. The coin and holder are but the box is not part of the Ike set. Ike’s came in a brown box, Morgan’s in a blue box. The sealed slab fits in both boxes.
Did GSAs have that printed message from President Richard Nixon inside the top of the box? Or could this be special Ike packaging for his or his campaign's use? Better photos might help.
GSA’s have the Nixon message but Ike’s do not. GSA’s are a blue package. Ike’s are a red package. The packaging has nothing to do with a campaign usage.
I don't see many of the blue package Morgans any more. With most of the brown box Ike's I see the boxes are in poor shape. I saved a few that had really nice coins in them.
I wasn't aware of the Nixon message in the GSAs. Thanks for the clarification. I do know that there was a special packaging for an Ike that the Nixon administration used for presentation to VIPs, friends, etc. I don't recall which it was - maybe it was the uncirculated Ikes. Update: this might be the one I was thinking of:
