OK guys. I need some help. I have the opportunity to buy this flying Eagle cent. It seems to be a fair deal on both ends, but on the reverse above the N in CENT it has some polish marks not sure if this is from cleaning the coin or is this from polishing the die let me know what you guys think. I checked the comps on eBay and it seems to have mixed results on the graded coin side. some have identical marks that are graded with details and then there are some that have the same marks that straight graded
The marks on the reverse look like post mint cleaning lines to me, but it's hard to tell from a photograph. If they are polish lines, they would be raised above the surface of the coin. If they are post mint, they go into the coin. You really need to see the piece in person with at least a 10X glass.
I would say it’s been cleaned but hard to tell from a photos. Cleaning marks will be cut into the surface of the coin. Best to have in hand with a magnifying glass.
Just being cute, sorry. It does appear that the reverse side has been cleaned maybe with a folded soft cloth, that possibly could be why the obverse appear shallow. just my opinion. Nice coin good luck.
Look at the reverse again. The marks I see appear to be cut into the coins surface just above ONE at the top of the wreath.
Looks like an older cleaning since the coin is starting to retone. To me, if it's not cleaned, this is an example as to why copper-nickel cents should have designations similar to the "bronze" cents.
I agree with @johnmilton on this one. They've got the coin priced at $5 over the AU-50 Greysheet bid, and if it's cleaned, it's best to buy it at around XF-45 price.
